Developmental Perspectives For The Instructional Learning Environment
Facilitator: Susan Gleason, Placentino Assistant Principal
One area of certain partnership has provided the networking with Wheelock College. This has afforded our Preschool and Montessori 3-6 and 6-8 teachers the opportunity to learn from Dr. Eleonora Villegas-Reimers, Associate Professor of Education and Chair Elementary and Special Education Department. Dr. Villegas-Reimers Wheelock profile can be found at the following link, Dr. Eleonora Villegas-Riemers Bio. The process of learning must match the children's natural curiosity and motivation to become knowledgeable and competent members of our community. Teaching must be geared towards children's strengths and the cultivation of children’s ability to promote successful learning. When the practitioner has a solid understanding of why children learn and what to expect for each child and their age and stage, the learning environment becomes fertile ground for the cultivation of learning. School is a special time for children to learn more about themselves and others as they develop skills in a safe, nurturing and fun place called school.

Technology Bits and Bytes
Facilitator: Winnie Carey, Instructional Technology Integration at Placentino and Miller Schools
The term “technology” refers to advancements in the methods and tools we use to solve problems or achieve a goal. In the classroom, technology can encompass all kinds of tools from low-tech pencil, paper, to high tech alternatives such as interactive whiteboards, tablets, Chromebooks and online collaboration. However, it can be challenging to select the “best” tech tools while not losing sight of your goals for student learning. Increasing teacher comfort level with today’s technology tools for teaching and learning is our main goal. Teachers will learn new ways of using tools they are familiar with and be exposed to brand-new tools and apps for use both in professional development and with students in the classroom.

Daily 5 & Daily 3
Facilitators: Allison Lindstrom, Literacy and Social Studies Specialist & Merideth Ekwall, Mathematics and Science Specialist
The Daily 5 (literacy) and Daily 3 (math) are frameworks for structuring literacy and math time so students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently, and deep conceptual understanding and mathematical proficiency. In Daily 5, students select from five authentic reading and writing choices, working independently toward personalized goals, while the teacher meets individual needs through whole-group and small-group instruction, as well as one-on-one conferring. These choices include: Read to Self, Work on Writing, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, and Word Work.Daily 5 classrooms produce productive, highly engaged students who are developing a true love of literacy. In Daily 3, students select from three choices, working independently toward personalized goals, while the teacher meets individual needs through whole-group and small-group instruction as well as one-on-one conferring.

Learning Through Co-Teaching
The focus of learning along side each other is something that comes naturally to teachers. At Placentino School, working with each other, conferencing, talking, and planning are the underpinnings of a classroom that benefits all learners, teachers and children alike! We focus our co-teaching professional development on the book, "Co-Teach!" by Marilyn Friend. This book keeps educators centered on harnessing the engagement of students to propel instructional development and quality.
