Summer Math Fact Letter

**This letter was mailed home in June to incoming fifth graders. **

June 20, 2021

Dear Parents,

I will be your child’s grade five Math, Science, and English Reading teacher. I look forward to meeting you and your child in the fall.

I am writing to ask you to take time to review the basic multiplication and division facts with your fifth grader this summer. I have attached a list of the math facts that your child will be held responsible for next year. I attached them so that parents know which facts need to be studied (not so they can be completed once this summer). *

We will not spend any class time reviewing these facts, so your child should set a goal to answer each math fact in fewer than three seconds by the end of the summer. Ensuring your child has these math facts memorized is an enormous gift you can give your child. I can assure you that the time spent on this task will pay off.

A copy of this letter will be available on my website if you happen to misplace your copy. Also, your child’s French teacher and I will mail a welcome letter before school begins in August. This letter will provide you and your child with more information on the upcoming school year and a list of school supplies. Thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Perpall

Some ways your child will benefit from having the basic math facts memorized:

- Students who have the basic math facts memorized are at an advantage in math class.

- Students who have the facts memorized often feel more confident in math.

- Your child will not need to study them at home during the school year on top of having to complete daily homework.

- Your child will be better prepared for bimonthly math fact tests that will begin within the first two weeks of school.

- Your child will be able to solve multi-digit math problems such as 86 x 79 more quickly and then be able to complete homework, classwork, etc. more quickly.

Possible ways to study facts:

- Flashcards that can be purchased at the dollar store, Target, etc.

- Watch the videos on the “Math Facts Videos” page of Mrs. Perpall’s website

- Math facts websites (simply do a web search for math facts practice)

- Math facts apps (simply search math facts apps)

- Drill facts during car rides, in line at a store, while waiting for meals at restaurants, etc.

- Print and complete the sample fact tests from the “Documents” page of my website

- Memorize in Minutes: The Times Tables (a book that uses rhyming to teach math facts)

*The multiplication and division facts students need to know are the 0s to 11s in both multiplication in division.
