Course Overview:
At the beginning of the year in 6th Grade Science, students will learn what characteristics are essential for a scientist to have, and will research a scientist or inventor who exemplifies these characteristics. Students will practice using these characteristics themselves while they learn about the scientific method, performing and writing up experiments.
In Earth Science we will investigate the Theory of Continental Drift originally proposed by Alfred Wegener, and how the Theory of Plate Tectonics explains changes on the surface of Earth. We will also investigate what's in our universe, including the galaxies, stars, and planets. We will also study fossils, and how the Geologic Time Scale was constructed by using techniques such as the Law of Superposition and radioactive dating.
In Life Science we will investigate the theory of evolution by examining animal x-rays and looking for common anatomical structures that indicate a common ancestor. Students will identify changes in environments that cause animal species to evolve over long periods of time, and will write about those changes. We will explore the system used for classifying animals, and review binomial nomenclature. Students will learn about cell structure, including various organelles, and will use microscopes to examine their own cells, single-celled organisms, and other items of interest. Finally, we will examine how various body systems work together to enable us to perform various actions.
In Physical Science we will learn how to describe, classify, and measure matter. Physical and chemical changes in matter will be observed and investigated through experimentation. We will also observe and describe mechanical waves and how they are formed. Students will describe the characteristics of waves including amplitude, frequency, and wavelength, and how waves can change - reflect, refract, and diffract - due to interference. We will also study electromagnetic waves, and how those waves enable us to send and receive information.
