Early Childhood Education

About Us

Over the years, there has been much research on the importance and relevance of early childhood education. The research revealed much about how children learn and develop. Studies have shown that early childhood is a time when significant developmental changes occur. These changes can have a profound and lasting impact for a child’s future. The Hoboken Early Childhood Program provides high-quality early childhood education opportunities that offers 3 and 4 year old children and their families a strong start in school. We are highly committed to the success of each child that enters our program and are dedicated to meeting their individual needs. Our New Jersey P-3 certified classroom teachers encourage children to learn through interactive play and provide them with a variety of hands-on learning activities.  All of our preschool classrooms display a warm and nurturing environment to support learning and development designed for our students to reach their maximum potential.

Our History

Hoboken receives funding to provide free full-day preschool for 3 and 4 years because we are a Former Abbott district. The preschool program is a result of a 1975 NJ Supreme court ruling, Abbott v Burke, aimed at providing adequate and equal funding to students in urban districts. The preschool program is funded by dedicated monies that come to us via a grant that is highly monitored by the NJDOE.  The early childhood program is run separately from the public school district budget and is not tax funded.

Who We Are

The Hoboken Early Childhood program partners with two local agencies- HOPES, CAP Inc., and Mile Square Early Learning Center. The district is proud of its over 50 year history with provider partnership. Both providers are monitored and supported via NJAC 6A:13A, High Quality Preschool Programming. Programmatically there are no differences in one program over the other. We have eight locations throughout the city to meet the needs of our growing program. We also house 5 preschool disabled (PSD) classrooms in Wallace Elementary. These classrooms are shared amongst the Office of Special Services and the Office of Early Childhood.
