He is a member of the Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia and had completed his GST Tax Agent course accredited by Royal Customs Malaysia. Graduated from the Upper Iowa University with honors and double major in Management and Management Information System.
Helmi has over 13 years of experience working in reputable public listed MNC and mid-tier chartered accountant firm in Malaysia handling various portfolios in relation to both direct and indirect tax.
He has been involved in all aspect of Malaysian taxation such as tax compliance, tax planning, tax audit, GST and sales and service tax. He has conducted multiple workshops relating to the implementation of GST and SST. He was also a speaker during the yearly Budget talk for his previous employers and was a guest speaker in The Star Media’s empowerment talk.
A graduate of London School of Economics (“LSE”) from University of London, Chris is a certified Customs Agent, HRDF Trainer, ISO 37001 Lead Auditor, Internal Auditor.
In his previous firm, he was the Head of the Indirect Tax unit of a top 10 international audit firm based in Kuala Lumpur. Under this capacity, he had led a dedicated team of Indirect Tax specialist in assisting a number of organizations with their respective indirect tax matters, including other Customs’ related matters. The uniqueness in his approach and opinions on indirect tax matter stem from the fact that he started his professional career in providing governance, risk and compliance services.
Some of the work that he had includes, assisting companies with their GST implementation, providing technical opinions, representing companies in disputing issues with the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and also at the Customs Appeal Tribunal.
He had also spoke on the local radio business program, BFM, where his view was sought on the practical implications of SST implementation. He is a veteran trainer and had conducted multiple seminars within Malaysian to crowds of over 1,000 participants.
