University Counseling

The university counseling program at Hanoi International School is a comprehensive initiative that engages the entire faculty and staff to provide exceptional support for students’ higher education planning and application process. Although the program officially begins in Grade 10, students are encouraged—and often choose—to seek guidance from their teachers and the university counselor as early as Grade 9. 

Beginning in the 10th grade, students will meet individually with the University Counselor in order to explore a pathway and pick courses for their IBDP years that correspond with that pathway.  Students will continue to meet individually on a regular basis with that counselor until their application journey is complete in the 12th grade, and all the while, they will continue to have university counseling as part of their learning experience.  By the time it comes to apply to university in the 12th grade, students will have a firm knowledge of the opportunities available to them and the steps needed to take to achieve their goals.  

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is highly valued by universities worldwide due to its academic rigor and holistic approach. It develops essential skills like critical thinking, research, and time management, making students well-prepared for university-level studies. Components such as the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) enhance students' analytical abilities, while the Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) component showcases leadership and extracurricular involvement. All reputable universities recognize the IB for advanced placement, course credits, and scholarship eligibility, giving IB graduates a competitive edge in admissions.

Additionally, research indicates that IB students have higher university acceptance rates compared to their peers in other programs. The IB’s multidisciplinary learning approach makes students adaptable and capable of excelling in diverse academic environments. Many top universities offer credits or advanced standing for high scores in Higher Level (HL) subjects, allowing students to save time and tuition costs. Overall, the IBDP not only strengthens university applications but also equips students with the skills needed to thrive in higher education and beyond.
