INITIATIVE #1
Upgrading and Enhancing School Facilities
New Main High School Office with Secure Entry/Check-In
The new high school office will have a new secure entrance that follows ADA guidelines. This entrance will be safe and accessible for everyone. It will be placed on the north side of the planned gym and on the west side of the current kitchen.
Inside, there will be a welcoming lobby where visitors can check in. The High School office area will have rooms for the principal, secretary, and nurse. This area will be about 3,130 square feet in size. It's designed to make sure everyone can enter and work comfortably while maintaining security.
New Gymnasium
The proposed new gymnasium will be on the southwest corner of the building. It will be 19,864 square feet and have a lobby, concession stand, and bathrooms.
The gym will also have modern heating, cooling, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. These systems will make sure the gym maintains consistent temperature, which will help everyone feel more comfortable when attending games or attending activities.
Seating capacity of 1,500 will be large enough for Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) to host postseason athletic events in Hinton.
The increased square footage of the proposed gym, in conjunction with the current gymnasium, will allow for larger high school and youth wrestling tournaments to be hosted throughout the year.
The increased square footage of the proposed gym, in conjunction with the current gymnasium, will allow additional access for Hinton youth basketball and volleyball programs to practice at more respectable times in the evening. This will also allow for an expanded number of teams invited to participate in tournaments, and ultimately, benefit restaurants and businesses in the community.
Choir, band, graduation and events like the annual Show Choir event will provide additional and more comfortable experiences for years to come.
New West Driveway / West Parking Lot / Combined Car & Bus Drop-off
Approximately 115,000 sq. feet of new asphalt will be laid on the west side to help improve the traffic flow before/after school and for all events in the proposed gymnasium. A proposed driving loop will provide a uniform flow of traffic.
A concrete sidewalk is also included for easy access to the new entrance.
There will also be 45,000 sq. feet of gravel parking area to accommodate overflow parking.
New West Entry Plaza
Add 13,000 square feet to the west entry plaza that serves the new gymnasium. This extra space will make the outdoor area larger and more welcoming for people to gather and will improve the flow of large groups entering and departing from the gymnasium.
New East Parking Lot
A new east parking lot will be next to the new gymnasium. This lot will cover an area of approximately 13,000 square feet. The parking area will be used for events and for people using the Wellness Center.
New Greenhouse
Construct a new greenhouse for the agriculture and science programs. The greenhouse will be about 1,200 square feet in size and be an additional place where students can collaborate with hands-on learning in a lab environment. This also provides opportunities for students work with local businesses and agriculture professionals as well as offer plants of various species to the community and surrounding area.
Additional Elementary Classrooms
Additional classrooms will be added to the elementary school for fourth grade students. By moving fourth grade to the elementary school, this will open up classroom space at the high school/middle school to better meet classroom demands with steadily increasing enrollment. There will be a total of four classrooms, a special education area, and an additional restroom.
High School Window Replacements
1922 Glass Block Windows
Replace the old glass block windows with windows the same size as the current ones so the important aesthetic history of the building will stay the same. This will provide a comfortable learning climate level maintained while honoring the legacy of the building.
1956, 1962 & 1968 Windows
Replace windows with new dual-pane and insulated windows. This will keep the building warmer (or cooler) and provide beneficial and cost-effective efficiencies.
INITIATIVE #2
Sustaining Relevant School Infrastructure and Education Quality
Replace Exterior Doors
Original exterior doors require replacement due to poor weather stripping and seals as well as rusting.
Reseal Control Joints
Control joints are designed to allow for expansion and contraction of the building structure; resealing them protects the structure’s strength and durability and prevents water intrusion.
Seal Building Envelope
Properly sealing the building envelope helps improve energy efficiency, maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures, and protect the strength and durability of the structure.
New Roofs
Replace existing roofs over the current shop area and 1968 administrative area on the first floor. The original rock ballasted roofs will be replaced with upgraded roofing known for its durability, energy efficiency and ease of installation.
1956 Wing Fascia Refresh
Installing aluminum flashing along the fascia is being done to achieve an improved appearance.
Steam to Hot Water Conversion
Replacing steam piping and radiators with hot water piping and radiators will create a more comfortable learning environment and reduce energy consumption. This involves eight second-floor classrooms.
Boiler Plant Improvements
Replacing old hot water pumps will save energy, reduce costs, and provide better temperature control. This helps make the school a more comfortable place to learn.
Gymnasium Stage Accessibility
The installation of a wheelchair lift on the current stage will provide handicapped accessibility and meet ADA (American with Disabilities Act) guidelines.
New Asphalt Pavement-Wellness Center
The Wellness Center unpaved gravel parking lot will be replaced with asphalt and include curbs to separate it from the nearby playground.
