What a truly fantastic half-term it has been! I find myself bursting with pride as I reflect on everything our school community has achieved together.
First and foremost, I must pay tribute to our wonderful Year 6 pupils. The dedication they have shown to their booster classes, and the extraordinary resilience they demonstrated during recent assessments, has been nothing short of inspiring. You should all be tremendously proud of yourselves. Now the hard work is done, you have so much to look forward to - puppet shows, celebrations, and exciting transition work as you prepare for the next great chapter at high school. The best is absolutely yet to come!
Our sporting achievements continue to bring great credit to the school. Take a look at Farooqi's news for more infomration. Alongside our sporting prowess, the performing arts remain firmly at the heart of school life. It was a genuine delight to see every child captivated by the live theatre experience brought to us by M&M Productions. It is moments like that remind us all why the arts matter so deeply.
This week's 'No Pens' Day was a highlight. Walking through the corridors and classrooms, the energy was simply electric with children engaged in a wonderful array of speaking and listening activities, debating, storytelling, performing and collaborating. It was a joy to witness.
As we look ahead to next half-term, we have much to celebrate. Our trips and visits promise memorable experiences for all year groups, and I am especially excited about our 'Great Get Together' - our community event that will showcase our children's creativity and bring families, staff and pupils together in the very best spirit.
Thank you to every child, parent, carer and member of staff for making this such a special half-term. Enjoy the well-earned break.
It has been a wonderful and busy term in Year 3! The children have been working hard across a range of subjects. In Maths, we have been consolidating our knowledge of the four operations before diving into fractions, with the children enjoying some fantastic hands-on activities. In English, Year 3 have absolutely loved reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, using it as inspiration to invent their own sweets and write alternative chapters — their creativity has been brilliant to see!
In Science, the children have thrown themselves into a series of exciting experiments all centred around plants — dissecting them, growing them, and investigating the conditions they need to thrive. Geography has taken us on a virtual journey to Australia, and although a real-life trip Down Under was sadly not on the cards, the children have loved exploring this incredible country and continent. RE has been a highlight of the term too, with the class learning all about Sikhism and enjoying the wonderful opportunity to visit a Gurdwara in person — a truly memorable experience!
Outside the classroom, Year 3 have been keeping wonderfully active. In PE, the children have taken part in Maypoling, outdoor athletics, and cricket, making the most of the lovely weather outside. We have also launched two brand-new clubs this term — a Stretch and Balance club and a DT club — both of which have proved very popular.
Thank you for your continued support; it is a joy to teach such an enthusiastic and curious group of children!
We look forward to a fabulous, fun filled final term of Year 3.
What a wonderful and busy half term it has been in Year 4! Here's a roundup of everything we've been getting up to.
In English this half term, we have been exploring Flotsam- a beautiful, wordless picture book that sparked rich discussions about our ocean environment and why it is so vital that we care for our seas. The children showed incredible creativity in responding to the story without words, using their imaginations to bring the narrative to life and paiting some incredible pictures.
We had a fantastic 'No Pens Day' that launched our new science topic all about living things. The children headed out into our school grounds to explore a variety of habitats, discovering the wildlife and natural environments right on our doorstep. It was a brilliant, hands-on way to kick off the topic!
A reminder that Year 4 children will be sitting the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) after half term. We have been working hard in class to build fluency and confidence, but regular practice at home makes a huge difference. Please do encourage your child to keep practising their times tables over the holiday; even just ten minutes a day will help!
Looking ahead to our final half term together, we have so much to look forward to! Our learning will take us deep into the rainforest, explored through both English and Geography. We also have some very exciting trips in the pipeline, including visits to the zoo and Legoland. More details to follow soon!
Wishing all our families a wonderful, restful half term break.
The Year 4 Team
Here's a roundup of what we've been getting up to across Year 5 this half term.
In English, we have been thoroughly enjoying our class novel, The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q. Raúf. To help bring the story to life, the children took part in a wonderful sensory experience, tasting lemon sherbets and pomegranates, just like those enjoyed by the characters in the book. It was a highlight of the term and really helped the children connect with the story in a meaningful way!
Our work with the School Linking Network continues to go from strength to strength. Classes 7 and 8 have thoroughly enjoyed their link days with their respective classes at Cutenhoe Road Primary School: we've had some fantastic conversations and shared experiences as a result. Class 9 are very much looking forward to welcoming pupils from Lady Zia Wernher School to Hillborough after half term and we know it will be a wonderful occasion.
In DT, the children have been busy honing their sewing skills in preparation for an exciting project after half term, where they will design and make their very own unique bags! Through this project, they are developing a range of valuable essential skills including planning, creativity, and the ability to adapt their ideas as they go — capabilities that will serve them well beyond the classroom.
Finally, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all parents and carers for your continued support in enabling your children to attend after-school tuition sessions. The impact is clearly being felt; lots of wonderful progress is being made, and the children are growing in confidence as they prepare for their transition to Year 6.
Thank you, as always, for your support. We look forward to sharing more exciting updates with you after half term
It has been an incredible half term for our Year 6 pupils and one that we will all remember for a very long time!
We could not be more proud of every single one of our Year 6 children and the dedication, resilience and hard work they have shown in the lead-up to and throughout their SATs this week. They approached their assessments with maturity and determination, and they should feel immensely proud of themselves. We certainly are!
Despite all the academic focus, creativity has continued to shine in our art lessons, where the children have been exploring the work of the abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky. They have produced some truly stunning pieces inspired by his bold use of colour, shape and form which has been a real testament to their artistic flair and imagination.
Continuing on the creative theme, we are very much looking forward to sharing the children's puppet shows with you after the half term break. They have put a tremendous amount of thought into them, and we think you are going to be very impressed!
This week has been a particular one to remember! Our trip to Chessington World of Adventures was a brilliant reward for all of the children's hard work, and was filled with laughter, thrills and fantastic memories. We were also delighted to host an ENO (English National Opera) Celebration Day here at school; a truly special occasion that showcased just how talented our Year 6 pupils are.
The excitement doesn't stop there! There is still so much to look forward to in this final half term at Hillborough Junior School. We have on-site camping, leavers' celebrations and assemblies, and- of course- our much-anticipated endof-year performance. The show we will be staging will be revealed very soon… watch this space!
