Project Launch
During the first field trip of the semester, students got to experience first-hand what they'd be trying to achieve during our final workshops, while also learning about the rich culture of Barrio Logan, especially in Chicano park. We got to go behind the scenes at Cafe Moto, a local coffee business, and see how they grew, tested, and produced high quality coffee in an engaging workshop. We also got a private tour of the Chicano Park museum and were able to admire the stories of those whose community was torn apart.
Phase I
This first step of the project had students in partnerships researching the history, uses, and benefits of one specific resource. They then created a zine summarizing both the chemical and historical importance of these resources, along with 2 separate posters for each topic. Feel free to look below at the final products!
This zine is the combination of information my partner and I learned about beer from the historical aspect, and chemical aspect put into small summaries. A zine is a small booklet with information about a specific topic, or in this case, resource. If you'd like to read it, you may click the title!
This poster was created early on in the project, my partner and I combined our knowledge about the history, harvesting process, and health impacts of our resource, beer. If you click the title, you can access the full poster!
This poster goes into detail about the main molecule found in beer, humulone! This assignment taught us how to create short-hand and full atom Lewis Diagrams, along with how to calculate the molar mass and the historical relevance of the molecule. if you'd like to see the full atom Lewis Diagram up close, click the title!
Phase II
This next step of the project had teams of four interview a local leader about their connections to food and health. the groups then took clips from their interviews and created a 10-12 minute long podcast with smooth transitions and conversational pieces, all about food, health, and cooking. Look below to learn more about my groups interviewee, Jennifer Chen!
Welcome to the Globally Boosted Podcast Series! We interviewed Jennifer Chen, Co-Founder of the #1 bakery voted by Yelp, Izola (eye-zola). We asked her questions that range from Izola's humble beginnings lowering bread out of a window during a pandemic, to what makes their business so inviting and comforting to people. She gave us so much deep insight on the values of Izola with heartwarming stories showcasing truly how much they changed their community, and we would love to share some of that interview with you! Please feel free to listen to the finished episode by clicking the title or visiting www.globallyboosted.weebly.com.
Phase III
As our workshops and fall exhibition approached, it was time for the groups to start cooking recipes that have 2 main ingredients that must react with one another using heat. Our group got bananas and milk so we made banana bread from scratch while learning how to communicate as a team in a kitchen, how to do stoichiometry and calculate theoretical yield, and how to have an engaging and professional presentation. if you'd like the recipe we used or the slides we worked so hard to create, look below!
We underwent 2 rounds of recipe testing before we created our final product for exhibition and our workshops. Our group made banana bread as our product had to have bananas, milk, and heat. Our group learned how to communicate in a busy kitchen, manage time, and how to make really good banana bread. If you would like the recipe we used, click the title!
Our final workshop presenting our work from the entire semester finally came and went. Our group of 4 split into partnerships and created detailed slides going over the history and nutrition of bananas and milk, how to make our banana bread, our cooking trials, what enthalpy is and some of the reactions happening in our banana bread. And finally we talked about stoichiometry and calculating theoretical yield. We presented to a group of middle schoolers to educate them how important nutrition is and chemistry things all in a professional manner with free samples at the end. If you'd like to see our slides, click the title!
Chemistry
As our kickoff to our semester learning chemistry, everyone made an 'Element of Self' poster. This is a poster that represents what we'd look like if we were an atom by using our strengths and weaknesses to represent the 3 core parts of an atom, protons, neutrons, and electrons. We then turned some of those traits into a pledge statement to either improve or continue some of the things mentioned. If you'd like to read some of the traits and pledge statement, click the title!
This creative poster made students show their "Good Graces" as we took our newfound knowledge on ionic and covalent bonds to create hand-drawn posters showing a visual of the two bonds differences with a real life example. I chose to make my poster based off the hit music video 'Taste' by Sabrina Carpenter featuring Jenna Ortega. I picked this as it "leaves quite an impression, (5 ft to be exact)" and the video mostly focuses on the two fighting over something, becoming friends, and electricity? I know I may not be the 'Sharpest Tool' in the shed but everything makes sense once you read the poster, which I had a lot of fun making, ('is it that sweet, I guess so?') if you'd like to see the poster up close 'Please Please Please' click the title!
Final Reflection
Going into this semester, I thought I'd hate chemistry. I mean, I hated physics, not because I had a bad teacher but because I didn't click with that branch of science. I always loved to bake and being able to spend a whole semester learning about the chemistry side of cooking and baking and then being able to share that new information with so many people made me enjoy the subject so much more. It brought so much joy into learning for me. I didn't think I'd be the one who'd know all the answers and have the new topics click into place but here we are. I'm going to miss this class for many reasons but we'll see how biology treats us next year.
History
In history, we mostly focused on learning about different religions practiced over time, and around the world. Our group was assigned to learn about Islam, and over the course of a week learned a lot about the origins and practices of the Islamic faith. If you'd like to see our slide more closely, click the title!
As we learned more about all the different religions practiced in the world, groups had to create presentations on a religious based conflict that is happening currently. My group got to learn about Hindu nationalism and what it's like to be Muslim and Hindu in India right now. If you would like to read the slides, please click the title!
English
This reader reflection was a way to summarize how students grew as readers over the semester by showing off 3 books they read and the themes they shared, going in-depth into one of those books, and some of their habits and goals as a reader then presenting them to the class. I learned that I enjoy the story of historical fiction books but tend to go to romance novels as they're easier to digest and read through. If you'd like to look at my slides, click the title!
Book reviews were a bi-monthly assignment students did to highlight a book they read during that time and give an in-depth report about it. I chose to talk about 2 books by my favorite author K.L. Walther, 'The Summer of Broken Rules' and 'What Happens After Midnight'. I chose these books because I love the game aspect in the novels, assassin in TSOBR and the prank in WHAM. If you'd like to read these reports click here for TSOBR and here for WHAM!
Math
To start off our semester in math, we created a poster highlighting who we were as mathematicians, our personality types, aspirations, and SMP growths and strengths. I learned that I am a ISFJ Personality type, have a love-hate relationship with math, and want to grow in challenging and experimenting in math! if you'd like to read my poster, please click the title!
As we capped off our probability unit, students had to create a digital poster about the fairness of a specific topic. I chose to ask if first responders or medical teams had a bias toward gender. I learned that there is a 74% difference between men and women being helped first in an emergency. If you'd like to learn more, click the title!
Our final unit before the end of the semester was quadratics and algebra. During this unit, students had a hands-on project creating bottle rockets in teams, collecting data, filming videos, and finally graphing the launches and calculating the velocity. My group made our rocket look like an eagle and were pretty successful (we only hit our teacher once).
Final Reflection
As we reach the end of our first semester in math I haven't really had time to reflect. I noticed that there's more energy and happiness when going to class and doing worksheets and I think there's many reasons for that. For starters I understood the material a lot as it was basically review with some new things added on top and having a good balance of going through tests and working with other people and reacting really well to the visual assignments. I think I've grown a lot in asking people I don't know for help, I used to be so proud and wanted to be independent but that's just not how it works, i'm slowly getting there and still have a bit to go but it's huge being able to get work done faster because I literally just walk 3 feet and ask someone to help me instead of waiting for my teacher who has 1000 other things going on. I mentioned this briefly in my 'I am a Mathematician' poster but I want to challenge myself academically, I always kind of stay in this bubble where i'm afraid people will think less of me if I fail or make a mistake which makes me afraid to reach out and try new things. I want to kind of tie in my own intrests and hobbies into math. For instance, I love to bake, but there's math involved, kinda. I don't know somethin
