For our first Epic Journey, we hiked Kwaay Paay and we all took a ton of photos for our graph and analysis, and we used 1 picture to be the main focus of a postcard we would send to a person of our choice. I had an interesting time on this hike, I learned that I hate hiking in a group, vertical hikes, and that I'm a really slow hiker. I felt a lot of mixed emotions and being able to capture that through my photos made this one of my favorite products, even though it was my least favorite Epic Journey.
During our hike at Kwaay Paay in Mission Trails, we each made a prediction of our speed and timed our actual speed. This was to be put on a poster where we made a piecewise function on a topic related to our hike on a scale from 1-5. I chose to put how many times I complained and I made it look super cute and themed to the terrain we were hiking and I really liked it since the actual hike was hot and I was tired and miserable. Our next adventure led us to the Anza Borrego Desert, where we spent 2 days as a team enjoying the outdoors and I experienced so many new things. We did an hourly check up on a topic related to our trip, we then made them into a piecewise function and poster.
Our big project from this trip is the lasercut mural we made together as a class. I was a major part of creating the layout and organization of completing the mural and my partner and I had an enjoyable experience hand cutting and staining our laser cut pieces. The end piece was beautiful and an accurate representation of the time we had.
Our next Epic Journey took us to the Orange County ropes course, this was the most challenging Epic Journey for me since I have a huge fear of climbing which led to a lot of emotional growth and sense of accomplishment when I went down the zipline, conquering the course.
Once we returned, our task was to make a 1:50 scale model of a ropes course obstacle of our choice. Unlike the ropes course, I quite enjoyed making this model and writing about my experience.
For our last Epic Journey, our team went to Cuyamaca State Park to camp for 4 days to celebrate everything we overcame throughout the semester. As a way to get us to connect as a team, we were partnered with someone we didn't know well and we spent time with this person and interviewed them multiple times throughout the trip. Once we got back we wrote about their experience showcased with pictures.
As preperation for our upcoming camping trip, we had to write multiple 2 sentance horror stories that we would share around the campfire. I hate horror so this was awful, I had no ideas and the internet was very helpful for this, then we had to expand one our 2 sentences and make it a proper story. I really struggled with this and I feel it was the weakest work I produced all semester. If you want to read it, click the title!
When we got back from our camping trip, we each picked a meaningful object or person from the trip and made a lasercut version of that in a really irritating program called Geogebra, which made our object geometric. Afterwards we oiled the pieces and I played a huge part of putting the pieces next to a custom bookshelf to create a second mural that summarized our second multi day adventure.
As our final hurdle of the semester, teams of 2 were tasked to create the best cardboard boat like an engineer, We made quad charts, scale models, engineering drawings, and we did a lot of in depth documentation that said what we did every day. Once we built our boat, I decorated it and then it was time for the race. Unfortunately our boat capsized, but it was a fun experience.
To say goodbye to our semester, we did a reflection using UC prompts to write a few paragraphs reflecting on our adventures. I chose to write about Anza Borrego, it was my first time camping and there were a lot of changes and during Anza Borrego it started to balance out, I felt really proud and I feel like it was a turning moment for the semester.
