Project Work
This mural is inspired by this quote we found, “You are not behind, It's not too late, You are exactly where you need to be”. We used the arms linking to symbolize that we are all connected and are here to support each other and the galaxy background represents that we are all members of the vast universe and it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. We created this in the Junior area as it's a very difficult year and some Juniors said they wish they could've had some sort of message.
Once we all completed our magazine articles, we added some poetry written by us as an intro to the magazine, along with translating summaries of our articles into Spanish. We produced 2 magazines with 40+ poems and 8 articles. If you'd like to read the Yellow version please click here. And if you'd like to read the Pink version, please click here.
For our main project, we interviewed artists, musicians, poets, and theater directors to create an article on their life. We interviewed San Diego Muralist, Celeste Byers and got to learn about all the murals she's made around the world while exploring her heritage, if you'd like to read it, please check it out!
Math
Our Trigonometry project this semester was called Trigonometric Illuminations. In groups of 4 students had to create a lantern using shapes that make up our lives inspired by our plays. We wrote a play about drama and made our lantern a broken heart on one side, and a full heart on the other, showing heartbreak and healing.
For our project we had to find missing sides of our prototype, an example being Ex. x/3.25, cos (40) x 3.25 = 2.49. In that scenario, 3.25 is the Hypotenuse being used to find the Adjacent. Once found, you can use the Adjacent for the other side of the triangle using any function needed. Now you’ll know how to find any angle and side length.
English
As we reach the end of the year, we completed a final reader reflection, talking about 6 books we read this year, how we grew as a reader, and how we want to improve in the next year. If you'd like to check out the books I read and goals I set for myself, please click the title!
These book talk slides are a common thing we did throughout the year where we show others what we've been reading in a summary, with a full review/reflection on Goodreads. This slide talks about the book I read, Accountable. If you'd like to learn about it, click the title!
Spanish
This project in Spanish had us each pick a country in Latin/Central America and create a travel brochure for that country. I did mine in Peru and talked about weather, currency, food, and must do's for Peru with Paddington (as he is from Peru and very knowledgeable). If you'd like to see my brochure, please check it out as I really enjoyed this project.
History
Ethnic Studies
A big part of our project was Ethnic Studies. Ethnic studies is the examination of culture, history, and experiences of various racial and ethnic groups. Here we went to Centro Cultural de la Raza.
Black in Latin America
For History, we watched the docu-series, Black in Latin America about Haiti, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. We learned about the politics, culture, and issues those countries are facing.
In this project, in groups we each picked a country and learned about colonialism in the area, resources, politics, and current issues. We picked Cuba, if you'd like to check the slides out click the title!
In groups we picked a branch of the United Nations and we picked the Peace Keepers and learned about it's creation, missions, and funding. If you'd like to learn about it, please click the title!
