Out of multiple prompts given, I decided on talking about a moment in the field trip that changed my perspective in how I view things. This activity also could be linked to how water affects people's emotions. The essay is based on the format of a UC essay which can help us when applying to colleges further on.
My partner and I researched about bodies of water in the San Diego County and decided on the Dixon Reservoir. While one partner focused on old history the other focused on the present history. We also included statistics about the reservoir and used equations to find some of the numbers in the right. We later added the sticker to a reusable water bottle.
Following the example of Humans of New York, we learned how to interview others. We started with our classmates, then family members, then lastly someone connected to water. This assignment helped us practice our communication skills and how to ask good questions with open ended answers. For some this assignment pushed them out of their comfort zone but it helped us expand our horizons.
The Ripple Effect project had many interesting assignments but personally I really enjoyed this one the most. The focus for this assignment was to educate us how to write a letter and pick out the best information out of all the ideas we had. That resulted in having strong ideas with very little writing. I enjoyed this one because I fell into a rabbit hole of information and personally I really like doing that because I learn much more than I was expected to.
After watching the Seaspiracy documentary on Netflix we learned about how our actions affect the water surrounding us. We went on the internet to look for a reliable statistic connected to the letter we sent to the Legislator. We included a graph, equations, variables, analysis, assumptions, and what we concluded based on the information we gathered from the graph.
For exhibition my group and I worked on producing a product that educated our guest on helping the water around us. The group I worked with decided to make a fish out of recycled carboard and waste we picked up after our lunch break which was a total of two pounds. This fish is suppose to represent that the trash we don't pick up can eventually end up affecting marine life which can later can affect us humans too.
Contemplating the scenario that the San Diego County had no freshwater, my group and I made a filter which would distill contaminated water in an attempt to survive. In this group we used a tea kettle, plastic tube, an adapter, a mason jar, and some form to heat up the water. After working on improving the design we produced a good amount of purified water to help us survive.
As a team we chose that had to do with phase change, and we chose the ice cream lab. We documented data, followed a procedure and tried to reduce sources of errors after running the lab multiple times. We also learned how to calculate heat using an equation. We chose this lab because many of us have heard of ice cream maybe even tried it before and this showed us that there is more to ice cream. We learned that because of sugar it doesn't become rock solid since it has a lower freezing temperature. We also learned that as the water in the mixture turns to a solid the mixture starts becoming solid.
