Early in the semester we went to mission bay to see a man made reef. After we had had our experience there we wrote this. This article highlights one of our experiences while at the bay in a first person perspective. Mine in particular was about an experience where I helped a peer in some way. This writing went through multiple drafts to turn it from a memory to a full out writing piece. It is one of my favorite writing pieces from this semester. My water card combines my skills from both humanities and math. There is three main things on my water card. In the top left a writing piece describing the closest body of water to my house. The two bar graphs and the box and whisker plot show class data for multiple topic's about water, with a small information box below. Which highlights the mean, median, mode, and range. Finally in the bottom left there is a pie chart showing my learning styles from a quiz we did. I feel that this assignment tested our organization skills and pushed us to create strong graphs to go with our class data. Click on my water card on the right to get an enlarged version of it.
The Pump Lab was one of my favorite labs in physics. The main focus of the lab was to create something with some 5 volt water pumps. Me and my group decided to make a lazy river. While making the river I had a really important experience; I got to learn how to use a band saw, which was really cool. Unfortunately our group ran out of time on the project and was not able to make a proper seal between the tube and the pump. This caused the river to leak and we were not able to collect any data. Please click on the image of our lab on the left to see some of my group slides.
The water bottle project had me with two partners. Me and my partners picked a body of water together, We picked Lake Murray. All of us did very in depth research of the lake from different time periods. Then we each wrote three small descriptions at different times of what was happing in our given time range. After we had done that we did a water color of what our place looked like at the time. Then we each found a few quicks facts about the place. This was all combined on Photoshop and printed to be a sticker. Which we then put on a water bottle. Please press on my work on the right for an enlarged version.
Humans of water tested our interviewing skills. We built up our skills with some practice runs with our friends and family (Humans Of Our Class and Humans We Know). We then had to do some research to find someone who had a connection to water. Once we found the person we contacted them to get an interview. It so happened that one of my friend's mom had a lot of experience with water working in environmental law, So that worked out well. In my interview I asked all the questions I could, to attempt to understand her connection to water. Because everyone recorded their interview they were able to put some of the best quotes from the interview onto a doc. At exhibition this interview was displayed on a template with a photo of the person. Click the photo of my interviewee on the left to read a condensed version what she said in the interview.
If I had to pick a favorite task of the semester I would by far say the water filter. Me and my group were tasked with creating our own water filter. After a week of planning and material gathering we had come to a design. We were doing heat distillation, Which to put it simply is the prosses of boiling water and collecting the purified steam after it separates from the other things in the water. But our way of doing it was fun. We made everything our self. Chopped our own wood, Made our own fire, Which we used to heat our homemade hot plate. It was very enjoyable and we ended up with great data after our three tests. I learned a lot of skills while doing this lab and enjoyed presenting it at exhibition. There is far too much for me to cover here. If u wish to find out more, please press on the image of me and my team cutting wood.
For sure the assignment I felt the most passion in while doing was the Letter To My Legislator and its sister assignment my Math Modeling Poster. Our goal was to reach out to our representative and discuss a topic about water or climate change that needed changing or needed their support. I picked to talk about the lack of America's electric rail and how our current means of cargo transport would be far more eco friendly I we could put in place more electric trains. In my letter I spoke my reasoning for the change I believe needed to happen. I used factual evidence to back up my reason and to bring out emotion from The Honorable Sara Jacobs. Please click the California State Capital above to read my letter.
My Math Modeling Poster was sent with the letter to Washington DC. It was here to back up my letter and provide more evidence for why we should change to electric rail. I compared the Co2 produced from electric trains, non electric trains, and semi trucks while hauling 3000 tons of cargo. The number are insane. To see a bigger version of my poster just click on it.
Our final piece for this project and what was presented was as follows. Todd The Turtle, who has trash on his under side. But more important than Todd was his story. Which attempted to really show terrible things marine life has to go through from our miss doing. Along with his narrative there was a factual writing piece which further helped the people we were presenting to understand just how bad it is in our oceans. The Math Modeling Poster was also presented along side Todd. If you would like to read Todd's story, click on him. After we had finished presenting those, we took our family on a tour of assignments you saw above. Besides the pump lab which I wanted to add because I loved the work. So think of this page like a mini exhibition.
