The Drama department at Highland High School has something for everybody. There is a Drama/Theatre I and Drama/Theatre II class, we have two plays a year that are open for anyone to audition, and one play that is just for freshmen and sophomores. There is also a Drama Club (known as the Thespians), and a backstage crew that works behind the scenes on lights, sound, set building, and much more.
Normally, we have two plays each year (one each semester) where anyone in the school can audition, and a smaller one-act play in the spring that is just for freshmen and sophomores. Please check back for updates on the 2020-2021 school year, as we are still waiting for guidance on whether these plays can take place this year in a modified way.
Our Drama club (also known as Thespians) is an opportunity for anyone who has a love of the theatre to meet with like-minded students. We play theatre games, work on monologues and scenes, have parties, put on Open-Mic Nights, and more! We will be starting for 2020-2021 very soon so stay tuned!
Theatre/Drama I is an introduction to the theatre arts for anyone! Whether you've been in plays since you were five or you've never been in a play before or you would like to get involved backstage, this is the class for you.
Theatre/Drama II is a little more in-depth. Because students can take this class multiple times, the topics covered vary from year to year. We might dive deeply into the technical arts and help build a set or do our own stage makeup. We write do in in-depth playwriting unit. Oh, the possibilities!
For each play and the musical, it's a new opportunity to sign up to help backstage. Usually, new students will start out helping the build sets, collect props, move scenery during shows (run crew) or assist a more experienced crew member on sound. As you gain experience, you could be running lights or sound, designing, and sometimes even working as a paid technician for events throughout the year!
