Students involved in the arts score higher on the ACT and SAT tests.
The Highland instrumental music program is one of the most successful programs at our school. They consistently earn the highest possible ratings at festivals and contests. The band has performed in festivals both in Arkansas and nationally, in places such as Gatlinburg, Tennessee, St. Louis, Missouri, and Orlando, Florida. Last summer, students performed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii with the Spirit of Aloha Honor Band.
This year, Highland had 33 students who earned honors by being selected to the All-Region Honor Bands, All-Region Jazz Band, and All-State Concert Bands. There are many Highland band alumni participating in collegiate bands. Each year band students are awarded college music scholarships. Most of these students are not music majors, but simply get paid to play their instrument in a college band - something they did in high school for free!
Students who are involved in band are also involved in other activities such as sports, clubs, choir, and honor classes. Studying music does not inhibit these activities, but often enhances them.Â
More importantly, students join band to make music. Making music is a fun, life-long skill. It is a class like no other!
Can my child be in sports/activities AND band?
Students can be involved in sports, cheerleading, and other acitivites every year through graduation!
What if we can't afford to be in band?
Please do not let financial reasons keep you from signing up. We can make it possible for any child to be in band.
Do I need to buy an instrument at this time?
Not at this time. We will discuss this when we get back to school.
