On the eve of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, we have an important role in telling the stories of a founder and statesman, a lost and found house, and generations of people connected to an unforgettable historic place. In 2026, we’ll celebrate this history and this remarkable place with programs, exhibits, and events that honor the past and inspire the future.
Highland explores topics related to its history, agricultural landscape, and events and activities. Join us for a history talk, a walk on the rustic trails, Descendants Day, an epic July 4th concert, the Albemarle County Fair, youth programs, and book talks. Be sure to join us and find your place in history!

Highland's many events and programs benefit from the collaboration of other local and regional entities. The American Friends of Lafayette shared planning and presentation of a fun day of history. The Albemarle County Fair is an all-volunteer group that puts on a three-day event at Highland to support youth in agriculture and promote community in the county. The Virginia Cooperative Extension and their community-focused Piedmont Mater Gardeners lend expertise to the fair and to many Highland programs each year. Approximately two dozen community partners host booths at Descendants Day, sharing their work and resources about history and collaborative projects. Others, including the Department of Forestry, BEACON Kitchen, the African American Pastors Council, individual Black churches, Piedmont Master Gardeners, Starr Hill Pathways, and Ivy Creek/Riverview Farm made our summer youth program possible. Several more, including Cultivate Charlottesville, the Cville Food Coop, the Black Family Land Trust, Piedmont Master Gardeners, and Sentara Martha Jefferson shared at Fall Feast. The Cville Cinco played themed and period music for an appreciative crowd at our winter open house. When you see these partners out and about, be sure to tell them how much they matter!
Volunteers at Highland make all the difference! Our trails and bee yard are entirely volunteer maintained. Volunteers add to interpretation, youth programs, public events, archaeology, photography, and projects on the historic property. We thank you!
We will continue sharing history, strengthening our programs and offerings with robust community partnerships, and exploring how the history of a place and its people still impact us today. We hope you will join us in 2026!
Thank you for being part of Highland's community. We ask you to please continue your enthusiasm for our mission in all its parts: public history, university and community learning, research, public events and programs, private events, the volunteer-led rustic trails and conservation efforts, the volunteer-led bee yard, and our collaborations across the community.
If you are able, please support us with a contribution.
