In addition to new exhibits, Highland's year-round programming includes daily site visitation, with interpreter-led walks and discussions throughout each day. Discussion focuses on James Monroe's career and political contributions and the social and economic forces of the time. The people and events of Highland, and their connections to U.S. history, are the subjects of the approximately 3,000 square feet of the new exhibition, Window to a New America.
Highland also offers public and educational programs for all kinds of visitors. Navigate to our web page to check our operating hours and events lists, and to sign up for our email list.
One of our core projects for 2025 will combine an initiative generated by the Highland Council of Descendant Advisors and academic work at William & Mary. The main concept is that traditional knowledge of gardening and food practices can build healthy relationships with the land for youth who are not already connected to these historic landscapes. A team of faculty and students will work together throughout the year to develop programs for local young people.
To extend the line of the Mellon Foundation's Sharing Authority grant, Dr. Lisa Armstrong has been hired as William & Mary's Public Historian for Highland. Dr. Armstrong has a Ph.D. in Applied Anthropology from the University of South Florida. Lisa will teach and lead public history that will continue the connection between students and the Highland Council of Descendant Advisors. Lisa is a descendant of the enslaved community at Highland. Her ancestors were among the individuals sold in slavery to Florida from Highland in 1828.
Leading up to 2026 we recognize that history is the foundation of the future. Highland's programs and site tours give insight into our country's history and invite visitors to consider historic economics, politics, and social factors—and how they are part of our present and future. Follow along as part of your exploration of 2026!
