March 2023

Principal's Welcome

Dear Parents/Carers

As we approach the end of Module 4, it is a chance to look back and celebrate what has been achieved. We have had several focus weeks. Book Week saw all of the children engaging in drama activities with different year groups as well as dressing up as a book character and producing some writing linked to a class text. Next up was Careers Week. This is the first time we have had a focus week for careers but we wanted to provide the children with further aspirations for their futures. We were lucky enough to have several volunteers speak to different class groups about their careers and the pupils then researched job roles linked to the answers they provided in a quiz. Pupils proudly discussed some of the presentations they produced in a whole school assembly. Mrs Hughes has shared more information in the newsletter. We then engaged with Science Week towards the end of the term. The focus this year was 'connections.' The pupils participated in different investigations linked to the theme as part of their curriculum journey.

If that wasn't enough we have also had classes welcoming visitors or going on school visits to support them with their learning, not to mention the incredible hard work the pupils demonstrate throughout their maths and English learning! It has certainly been a very busy module!

Thank you to all of the parents and carers who joined us for the Parents Evenings last week. As a result of the recent survey we have striven to provide additional information so you feel you know what your child is doing and how your child is getting on at school. We hope you have found the Yearly Overview shared this week useful as well as the option to see your child's current teacher assessment grades on MCAS. We will shortly be providing a list of recommended books to support with learning at home as some parents have fedback that they do no know how best to support their child e.g. to write a sentence with a fronted adverbial or to complete a multiplication question. You will have the opportunity to order the books through the school at a reduced price. We hope this is useful to you too.

The newsletter is bursting with updates so make yourselves comfortable with a cup of tea and find out what has been happening at High Halstow Primary Academy this module!

I hope you all enjoy the Easter Break. We look forward to welcoming the pupils back to the academy on Monday 17th April.

Mrs G Stangroom

Grasshopper Class

This has been a very busy term for Grasshopper Class! Firstly, we had some giant eggs appear in our classroom! This was very egg-citing!  We think they may belong to dinosaurs, and this prompted our learning around an inquiry on dinosaurs. We have been busy describing dinosaurs, learning facts and even a song that we can’t wait to share with you in our class assembly.

This term we have celebrated Book Week where we enjoyed taking part in a drama workshop. It gave us a good chance to practise our animal noises as we recreated the story of ‘Dear Zoo’.

We have been looking at different jobs in Careers Week - we enjoyed sharing what we would like to be when we grow up. Many choose careers in the emergency services, and also as monster truck drivers!

We finished our busy term with Science Week, where we have been looking at different investigations to support the theme of ‘Connections’. Most of our learning followed a story about broccoli, and how it came from the farm to the fork! We spent some time learning about where our food comes from.

A huge well done to Grasshoppers this term, it has been a very busy one, and they have enjoyed getting stuck in with all the different types of learning that's been happening this term! We wish you all a restful Easter break!

Dragonfly Class

Our first day of Module 4 started with a mystery letter and some magic beans. We later found out that this letter was from a boy called Jack and he needed our help to plant them so that a giant would leave him alone. Since then Dragonfly class has looked after these beans and they have grown into huge beanstalks. Our inquiries then led us to find out all about plants and how they grow. Dragonflies have enjoyed learning the names of many different garden and wild plants that we found around us as well as discovering how many ways plants are used by living things like for food.

Thank you to the parents that joined us during our Open Classroom events. We had so much fun tasting all the fruits and vegetables to create our own healthy snacks to sell in the supermarket.

We have also had so many other exciting events in this module such as Book week, Careers week and Science week. During book week our classroom had another visitor who left us a nest and eggs but we noticed one of the eggs was unusual. We read the traditional tale of the Ugly Duckling and realised what might hatch from these eggs. We then did a fantastic job of retelling the story of the Ugly Duckling and acting out the story for others.

Dragonfly Class were very caring learners during Science week as we learnt how other living things need plants for shelter and food. We explored our school grounds and found the variety of minibeasts that rely on plants. To help them survive we considered ways of making bug hotels that we can check on regularly to make sure that the minibeasts have all the plants and shelter that they need. Well done Dragonflies for all your hard work in such a busy module. Enjoy your Easter break!

Ladybird Class

Wow what a busy term we have had in Ladybird Class!  We have taken part in Book week, Careers week and Science week! We also welcomed parents into Ladybird Class this term which was a lovely experience for the children as they had opportunities to share their learning with their adults.

Our inquiry this term has been around the theme of materials, their uses and how they change. We have also learnt about how plastic is recycled. The children have carried out a range of different investigations including finding out which paper towel was the most absorbent and which material was the stretchiest!

We really enjoyed our drama workshops during book week when we were part of the re-telling of The Gruffalo with Year 5.

During Careers week we thought about what we might like to be when we grow up and had the opportunity to listen to some visitors to school sharing their careers with us.

In English we wrote some fantastic alternative traditional tales and wrote explanations based on the journey of a plastic bottle!

To complete a very busy term, on the last day of term we visited The Science Museum in London!

Spider Class

Every module has seemed to fly by this academic year however this one really has been full on! We have been so engrossed in the learning and I know the children will talk enthusiastically about it.

In maths we have been developing our knowledge of fractions.  We have had Book Week in which we became poets! Careers Week provided opportunities for us to enjoy a range of guest speakers and had the opportunity to explore a range of jobs that we might not have necessarily thought of before.  During Science Week we linked our science topic of ‘rocks’ to our Inquiry learning.  The children loved making edible versions of different rock types.  The class have been extremely engaged in our learning about Pompeii and were asking valuable questions which led to some excellent conversations. Year 3 are becoming great inquirers!

Cricket Class

We started module 4 with our trip to the estuary.  Cricket Class embraced the rain and freezing winds, wrapped up warm and headed off to Alhallows to study the coastline.  Throughout the workshop we undertook some birdwatching, went crabbing, shell hunting and even had time to squeeze in a beach clean! We were amazed at the amount of litter we found in such a small area of the beach and had some really interesting discussions about the materials and how they impact our environment and the wildlife. Crickets really enjoyed learning about the scientific water cycle and different states of matter.  We carried out a range of experiments to test the melting and freezing point of chocolate, to demonstrate the process of evaporation, condensation and accumulation.

In maths we have been working really hard on our multiplication skills and have seen many children in the class achieving their maths champions targets.  We have also been making clay tiles inspired by various paintings of rivers by artists such as Van Gogh and Monet.

During careers week we enjoyed meeting a variety of professionals (both online and in person) to learn more about their profession and what their typical working day looks like.  We then used adobe express to create informative video clips about a variety of careers we had encountered throughout the week.

We cannot believe we are over half way through our academic year already, we still have a lot of exciting activities and learning opportunities ahead of us as we welcome module 5!

Ant Class

Year 5 have had another fantastic, busy and fun term!

The class have been extremely engaged in our inquiries this term, beginning with delving into the Solar System, where they gained a lot of knowledge and were fantastic scientific inquirers, investigating why we have day and night and why the moon appears to change shape.

Our second inquiry led us to learning about human exploration of space. We thought about how the first moon landing could have been broadcasted back in 1969, learning all about how the BBC managed this and how James Burke presented it. The class really enjoyed writing scripts to interview him! The class also wrote some fantastic diaries in the role of a space explorer.

Our next inquiry will have us thinking about technological advances and how these have impacted our exploration of space.

One piece of writing, which definitely needs to be celebrated this term, is the character descriptions that the children wrote of an alien they created for Book Week! These were absolutely brilliant pieces of writing, showing just how much progress every child in Year 5 has made already. This writing has been inspired by our class text this term (a novel set in space) called Phoenix.

We are now very much looking forward to our class visit on the last day of term to the Science Museum!

Well done Ants for all your hard work. Have a great Easter break!

Butterfly Class

Butterfly Class have worked extremely hard during module 4. We began the module by applying our cooking skills. The children worked in groups to prepare and cook tasting dishes for different countries across the world. In writing, the children worked on suspense pieces and created gripping stories that led to challenging circumstances. This module, the pupils have been working on editing and improving to produce longer writing pieces. In Science, the children focused on sources of power. As well as this, they learnt and inquired about ways in which we can create renewable power and help our planet. In Maths, the pupils focused on decimals and algebra. Additionally, the pupils have been recapping arithmetic, reasoning and problem-solving skills in all areas.

Staffing Update - Grasshopper Class

As you aware, Miss Bennett will be leaving us on Wednesday 26th April 2023.  I know you will join us in wishing her every success for the future.  We extend our thanks to her for her support and commitment during her time with us.  Mrs Finan will be joining us after the Easter break to work with Miss Ingram in the Grasshopper class.

Book Week

The children really enjoyed Book Week, which was from 27th February to the 3rd March. The theme for our Book Week was 'You are a Reader' which encouraged every child to see the value in themselves as a reader. Class teachers used a variety of texts to support with hooking children into their learning, this ranged from poems in Year 4, and alternative traditional tales in Year 2. Children produced a range of outcomes, which included poems about volcanic eruptions, suspense writing and creating their own alternative ending for a traditional tale.

We also had some fantastic drama workshops, children recreated popular stories such as the Gruffalo and Dear Zoo. Children were confident in their performances and could act with enthusiasm!

With every Book Week, it is always a pleasure to see the creative costumes and the buzz from children discussing their characters and favourite books. A huge well done to everyone that took part by sharing their favourite books, and dressing up!

Miss Bennett

Careers Week

The children really enjoyed Careers Week, which ran from 6th-10th March this year. During the week, every year group had the opportunity to listen to volunteers who came in to speak to us about their career. These talks were extremely eye-opening and inspiring for the children, creating a lot of discussion and interest in a wide range of careers. Some examples of the variety of careers we were enlightened by included a radiologist, a wedding stylist, a police detective and a Houses of Parliament camera operator.

The children also had careers week projects in which to participate in their class. KS1 enjoyed creating a digital book, using Book Creator, to show what they want to do when they grow up. The school loved hearing about these and seeing some examples in Friday’s assembly.

KS2 created an Adobe Express video, titled ‘A Day in the Life of…’ where they researched their chosen career, before writing a script, planning the video and then making it. We really enjoyed watching some of these in the assembly too!

Nature Squad Update

Spring is here (well almost!) and Nature Squad have been busy planting vegetable seeds (in our new greenhouse) and ‘chitting’ potatoes.  The weeds have started to sprout and so adds another job to the list!

The school recently took part in the Big Garden Bird Watch in connection with the RSPB.  After every class took part in the survey of our school grounds, these were the results:

Bird feeding is going well and our local blue tits, sparrows and friendly woodpecker are enjoying the seeds and fat balls!

As Spring erupts the children are so excited about growing our snacks - so far we have planted cucumber seeds, tomatoes, courgettes and have planted onion sets.

WE ARE WINNERS!

Last month Nature Squad took part in an idling competition linked with Medway Council.  We have just had news that we have won!  More news to follow about the prize!  Many thanks to Nature Squad for extending their school day to take part in the competition.

Class of The Week

Jazz and Baxter have introduced a 'Class of the Week' trophy for the class with the tidiest cloakroom and classroom.  The children are working hard to ensure the environment is "Jazz and Baxter ready." Our first winners were Spider Class! Well done!
