December 2022

Principal's Welcome

Dear Parents/Carers

I am sure I think this every year, but how we are in December already I do not know! As you know there has been a lot to celebrate this term. Not only through the learning that has taken place in the classrooms but also through all of the fun events that have taken place.

A highlight this module has been Courtney Tulloch visiting on 7th December! He really inspired so many of our pupils and was really fitting with our motto, ‘Dream, Explore, Succeed.’ Mrs Hughes has shared more details within this newsletter so please do read on to find out more.

A special thank you must go to the PTA and all of the volunteers who helped at the many events that they have organised. There was the first ever wreath making workshop which was a huge success as well as our traditional events that our pupils have come to love such as the Christmas shop and the panto, not forgetting the Christmas Fair. The PTA makes such a huge difference to the opportunities we can offer our pupils. Our school grounds would not look the same if it wasn't for the tireless fundraising efforts of the PTA. I am sure you will join me in thanking the many volunteers who give up their time to give our pupils and families great memories.

Thank you to all of our families for coming to enjoy the Christmas shows this year. After three years, we have finally been able to celebrate Christmas with you in the way that we enjoy! It was wonderful to see such beaming faces as we remembered that for some of our parents and carers it was the first time you have been able to watch your child perform.

I wish you all a very happy Christmas. I hope you get some quality time to celebrate with friends and family. We will look forward to welcoming pupils back to the academy on Thursday 5th January 2023.

Mrs G Stangroom

Grasshopper Class

We have had another busy half term in Grasshopper class! This half term we have spent time looking at different festivals and celebrations from around the world before ending the term with some Christmas celebrations.

We have spent lots of time learning all about different feelings and emotions and in particular we enjoyed reading Gustavo the Shy Ghost and The colour Monster- we even got letters from them and spent time writing our own letters back!

We also then decided to open our own snack shop- something which we are all really enjoying!

This half term we have also worked hard on our phonics and have been learning how to write short words and even exploring how to think of and then write a simple sentence which has meant that we have been able to write our own letters to Father Christmas!

Dragonfly Class

Dragonflies have had another brilliant term working extremely hard in their inquiries. We started the term by investigating how nature changes through the year. To do this, we tracked the weather over the first week, using weather symbols to record this and the temperature changes. The classroom then became our very own weather station where Dragonflies took on the role of a weather forecaster to broadcast our current and future weather. They were very brave and performed these in front of the class! This led us onto exploring the different seasons in the year and the weather we experience in each. Since then we have thought about how we can use nature for enjoyment. Lots of us really enjoy Summer because we are able to go to the beach and build sandcastles. To develop our Art skills we have looked at the artist Claude Monet who is famous for painting landscapes through the different seasons. We used his style of painting to recreate a scene from our class text “The Lighthouse Keeper’s Cat” with the use of warm and cool colours.

Finally, we have had lots of different Christmas events and activities to enjoy. The children have done a fantastic job learning their lines, the songs and actions for our Christmas Nativity. I hope the Dragonflies and their families have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Ladybird Class

This term has been a very busy term with lots of excellent learning taking place and some exciting opportunities as well such as our African dance workshop. During the workshop the pupils had the opportunity to learn some African dance moves and to create their own dance sequence using an African story as a stimulus. The pupils loved this experience, especially wearing the animal masks!

The pupils really enjoyed our class text ‘Fly Eagle Fly’ and they wrote a diary extract and a setting description based on the story.

In our inquiry work the pupils have been using maps to locate Kenya on a map of the world and have been exploring the human and physical features of both the UK and Kenya. They have been researching animals that live in Kenya- ‘The Big Five’ and are writing non-chronological reports about them.

In art we have been looking at examples of African art and patterns and are designing and making our own African patterns to then print using a printing block.

Of course, this term we have also been working hard on our Christmas Nativity which we are all looking forward to sharing with all our families.

Hope that you all have a wonderful Christmas and I look forward to the New Year with Ladybird Class.

Spider Class

We have very nearly made it to the end of module 2 - how are we a third of the way through the academic year already?! As you can imagine, this module has been extremely busy!

In Spider Class, we have been learning about people from the past. We started by becoming archaeologists and uncovered a collection of artefacts which have since been on display in our classroom. They helped us to understand the lives of the Celts, Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings - They were all pretty violent and loved having battles! We completed research and then created non-chronological reports. Then we learnt a skill which we found a little bit challenging but we enjoyed nonetheless - sewing! We were very proud of our Viking purses which had our initials in runes on them. We then used our Chromebooks to write an evaluation. After this we started to look at art from these different groups of historical people and began reading our key text ‘Arthur and the Golden Rope’.

Spider Class hope you all have a merry Christmas and a very happy new year.

Cricket Class

As we reflect back on the learning in module 2 it becomes clear just how much we have managed to learn, in what seems like such a short space of time. We have been learning all about ‘The Arts’ and how we use different art forms to express ourselves. We kick started our module by exploring paintings through time and discussed how different people are drawn to different styles. We then focused on the pop art movement and wrote biographies about Andy Warhol and produced some art work using a range of his techniques. These are proudly on display throughout the main corridor so please do take time to admire them. We have particularly enjoyed publishing our work on the chromebooks and demonstrating our ICT skills. Speaking of ICT, we have become technological wizards this module and have learnt how to use a range of programmes such as book creator, google sheets and adobe express. The children were pretty awesome at navigating their way around the different programmes and even taught Mrs Wilson a thing or two!

Without a doubt, the most exciting thing about this module has been discovering that we have been lucky enough to secure tickets to go to the O2 area to perform at the Young Voices concert 2023! To say we are excited is an understatement! Rehearsals are well under way, we have been singing and dancing every spare second that we get and cannot wait to represent High Halstow Primary Academy as part of the worlds largest choir! Look out for our next newsletter to see all of our updates and pictures on how it went.

Mrs Wilson and Mrs Fox would like to end this module by wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Ant Class

Year 5 have had another fantastic, busy and fun term! Our inquiries began by us looking into Ancient Greece and whether they had any organised sport. This soon led us to finding out all about the Ancient Olympics, where the class did some fantastic artwork and poetry! We then researched the Modern Olympic Games and thought about the similarities and differences between the two. We had a look at some of the most successful Olympic athletes, and enjoyed writing biographies about them. It was fascinating finding out so much about their lives!

Our inquiries have also fit in very nicely with our visitor this Wednesday… We are very excited to meet the Olympic gymnast Courtney Tulloch!

Well done Ants for all your hard work. Have a great Christmas break!

Butterfly Class

Module 2 in Year 6 has been eventful! During the module we have following lines of inquiry, linked to our central idea that, ‘people express their beliefs, thoughts, feelings and personality through portraits’. The children have been creating their own Tudor self-portraits after exploring how people in the past used portraits to form an impression of themselves as wealthy or distinguished. The children have also looked at portraits by a variety of artists such as Picasso, Sir Fredrick Leighton and Andy Warhol. In English, the children created their own, ‘silly explanations’ that led to explanations about how a variety of art movements were formed.

As a class, the children have reflected on their own thoughts and feelings towards their learning. The children continue to strive to meet targets and have been learning about the division and multiplication of fractions in depth. In the lead up to Christmas, Butterfly class are supporting years 3,4, and 5 with the production of ‘Bah Humbug!’ They have had the opportunity to express themselves musically through song and dance. Year 6 have continued to set a prescient for the other children in the school and will continue to do so in 2023!

Walk on Wednesday (WoW)

It’s back! From this term, your child will be collecting stickers each Wednesday if they come to school (or part-way to school) by walking or cycling/scootering. The aim of WoW is to encourage our pupils to walk (or cycle/scooter) to school at least once a week. If you live too far away, perhaps you could consider parking in a nearby street and then walking the rest of the way?

Children are issued with WoW passport tally cards where they can fix these special stickers every time they walk to school on a Wednesday.

The KM Walk To School Team has provided us with a trophy, so that at the end of each week, the class with the largest numbers of walkers can be presented with the trophy in our celebration assembly.

Sports Update

We’ve had a busy term of competitions! We began the year with the Hockey Mini-Youth Games, where we had an amazing team who really made our school proud. Out of the 8 games played, we won 4, lost 2 and drew 2. Well done team!

The next Mini-Youth Games was basketball. Once again, the High Halstow team represented our school brilliantly and played brilliantly. Our end result was 14th out of 30 schools.

Our third and final competition of the module was the Leigh Academy Trust swimming gala, where we went along to Sir Joseph Williams Mathematical School for a fun-filled morning of swimming! The 4 swimmers did exceptionally well, with us finishing in 5th place out of 15 schools (plus, a medal for Elizabeth who came 3rd in the final!!)

We’re now very much looking forward to the start of 2023, where we’ve got the swimming Mini-Youth Games and the years 3-4 and 5-6 Indoor Athletics events.

A visit from a very special guest!

On the 7th December we excitedly welcomed one of the most successful male British gymnasts of all time, Courtney Tulloch, into our school! His assembly was extremely inspiring, encouraging the children that absolutely anything is possible if they work hard for it and keep trying no matter how hard it gets. It was also a lot of fun - especially the part when he dive forward-rolled over Mrs Stangroom, Miss Lewis and Mrs Hughes all at the same time! Every child then took part in a fitness circuit, organised and led by Courtney. This was hard work but very very enjoyable! The children loved spending time in his company and having the chance to ask him questions.

Thank you to everyone who raised money through sponsorships. We raised an enormous £1843, which will be split between the Sports Champions charity and our school. A huge well done everybody!!

The afternoon of the 7th December 2022 will most definitely be in our memories forever!

English Update

To further support our learning, Key Stage 2 have been able to take part in weekly drama workshops. In these workshops we have been focusing on performing with confidence, using our voices, body language and facial expressions to convey our emotions as well as using intonation when speaking aloud and always considering our audience. These skills are imperative for our development as learners and we are already seeing these skills transferring into both our writing and our reading. Children are reading aloud in class with increasing confidence, ensuring they engage their audience by using intonation and having the confidence to take risks, make mistakes and overcome them. Please continue to share a range of books at home and encourage opportunities for the children to read aloud and demonstrate some of these key skills we have been learning. Christmas is an excellent opportunity to engage in a variety of reading genres, some of our personal favourites are:

  • The Night Before Christmas by Clement C Moore

  • A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

  • The Christmasaurus by Tom Fletcher

  • The Snowman by Raymond Briggs

Key Stage 1 will have the opportunity to enjoy these workshops during module 3 and we have no doubt that they will enjoy them as much as Key Stage 2 have.

PTA Christmas Events

The PTA would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for their support and generosity. The PTA Christmas fundraising totals are £3,313.05 which is a fantastic amount to raise in just a short space of time!

School Council Charities

At the last School Council meeting the class reps decided upon three charities to support for the year.

We have chosen a local, national and international charity to support and they are:

  • Make a Wish (Superhero Day)

  • Dogs Trust (PJ Day and bring a soft cuddly toy animal)

  • Team Seas (Come in wearing something blue)

More details will be shared ahead of each planned event.
