Welcome to this fortnight’s chronicle, these two weeks have been amazing! Everybody is doing great. When the half term is over our school’s Year 6 is going to start cycling for the whole week. Fun right? Pupil voice groups have began planning their ideas for the upcoming events, but other fantastic news to share is your donations for the harvest festival. Thank you so much! Children throughout the school have gone bowling, rugby and many other events. We hope you have enjoyed reading this, we’ll see you all after half term. Hwyl Fawr!

Our Family Engagement Planner which we shared with you in the Summer Term, has key dates for the academic year, including our INSET days.
On Monday 13th October Year 6 went to Big Pit National Coal Museum to enhance their 'Back to the Future' theme. We explored the full site, engaging in a 3D virtual miners experience, handled artefacts in the museum and finally kitted up to descend 90 metres underground to experience a guided tour of the mine. We couldn't have had a better way to immerse ourselves in the life of Victorian children and to discover how the Industrial Revolution changed Wales. It was a pleasure to listen to the children sharing all of their knowledge and understanding with the tour guides that we have already found out about in school. We are ready to continue the next part of our learning journey.
Thank you to all four parents who put their names forward to become a parent governor. After a VERY close election, I am pleased to announce that Sian Goodridge received the most votes and has been elected as the parent governor.
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our Autumn term parent/carer engagement sessions. We hope you enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside your child and that you have learnt more about us being a 'No Outsiders' school - All Different, All Welcome.'
Thank you to Mrs Rees who has temporarily been teaching in Reception since the start of the academic year. Mrs Glencross will commence her full time teaching role in the Reception class after half term and Mrs Rees will continue to work two days a week in Year 1. We hope you enjoy your days off Mrs Rees!
We are sad to have to say goodbye to Mrs Nowell one of our Midday Supervisors. We would like to wish her the best of luck for her future endeavours.
It was hyfryd, lovely to croeso, welcome so many families into school on Wednesday 15th October to celebrate Diwrnod Shwmae. We hope you enjoyed our Paned a sgwrs with our Criw Cymraeg a Draigs hosting our event. Diolch am dod, roedd yn llawer o hwyl a sbri. Thank you for coming it was a lot of fun!
On Wednesday 15th October these fabulous children respresented High Cross Primary at the Newport Schools' Autumn Shield Rugby tournament. They were a fantastic team. It was a pleasure to see their hard work in action as they played several matches against other schools. Thank you to their coach Mr Molano for preparing them for the event in our after school club. We are incredibly proud of them.
We will be holding a Book Fair in the school hall on Friday 14th November from 3:30pm to 4:15pm. Throughtout the week, the children will have the chance to browse the selection of books with their class. We hope you’ll be able to pop in after school to see the wonderful range of books available.
Please note: purchases can be made by card payment only.
On Thursday 23rd October we held our whole school Harvest celebration. It was a pleasure to have our Reception families join us for this assembly. Every class performed either a poem or song and Lois came to talk about the Liberty Church Foodbank. Thank you High Cross families for your generous donations for the foodbank, it is very much appreciated and goes a long way to support those in need.
Heddlu Park worked with PCSO Gilette last week to learn about Operation Bang. We learnt about safe and legal use of bonfires and fireworks, as well as who is allowed to sell fireworks. Operation Bang raises awareness of antisocial behaviour during Halloween and Bonfire Night. The aim is to ensure everyone feels safe. The 'no callers' posters can be displayed to let your neighbours know that you would prefer not to be disturbed. You can print the poster using this link.
On Monday 20th October, Year 6 went to Raglan Barracks for the Newport Crucial Crew event. They engaged in a series of workshops, all with the aim to equip them with knowledge and skills to keep them safe. They worked with the St John's Ambulance, the Fire Brigade, Network Rail, Lifeboats, Electricity Board, Crimestoppers Fearless and many other services. They had a great time and as always were exemplar role models for our school.
2025 is the 11th Anniversary of Wear Red Day. The first celebration in 2014 saw 7,000 people registering to take part. In 2024, that figure had exploded to become 710,000 participants celebrating. As well as showing our support on the day, being a No Outsiders school, we believe that everybody belongs. Change hearts, change minds, change lives.
We will be supporting the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal fundraising campaign again this year. Money raised in the appeal is used to support the Armed Forces community in lots of different ways, including those in active service, veterans and their families. Items such as bracelets, keyrings, pin badges and paper poppies will be on sale from Monday 3rd November. Items will be between 20p and £1.50.
On Friday 28th November 2025 the children are invited to wear their own clothes in support of the PTA Christmas Hamper raffle drive. If children could please bring a 'Festive treat' to be included in the Hampers to be raffled at the Christmas concerts in December to raise funds for the PTA. Festive treats could be chocolates, smellies, a bottle or any other little treat you'd love to win in a hamper!
