Our Family Engagement Planner which we shared with you in the Summer Term, has key dates for the academic year, including our INSET days.
Our newly appointed Year 6 Heddlu Bach had their first training session with PC Donne from the Next Generation Team. They talked about road traffic policing and the different responsibilities of the traffic police department. It was lovely to see our two PCSOs' who carried out the interviews pop in to say hello. Heddlu Bach will now plan their focus themes for the Autumn term to support our school and community.
On Tuesday 30th September we had a fabulous day at ‘We the Curious’ all the children were thoroughly engaged and focused from start to end. They explored the hands on museum exhibits, worked hard to test materials, build and launch rockets to take us on an exciting journey through the stars which they explored further in the planetarium. They were shining, star role models of our school. Bendigedig Blwyddyn 2.
Nursery are thrilled with their newly fitted bathroom! The fresh, child-friendly space is both practical and welcoming, helping to support the children in becoming independent in their hygiene routines.
We currently have one parent governor vacancy. The number of nominations received, exceeded the number of vacancies. Therefore a ballot is currently being held. One voting form per family has been sent home. The closing date for votes is Friday 17th October 2025 at 4pm. We will of course let you know the results when the votes have been counted.
We currently have a vacancy for a midday supervisor. If you are interested in this position or if you know of anyone who would be interested, please visit Newport City Council website (Jobs) where the advert and job application can be found. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 22nd October 2025.
Since the start of term, we have noticed an increase in children bringing in resources such as ear defenders, teddies and fidget toys. Any sensory equipment or other resources must be agreed, prior to any such items being brought into school. A conversation needs to take place between parents/carers and staff so that your child's needs can be discussed and appropriate ways forward agreed. Any agreed resources brought into school should not be distracting for other pupils.
On Tuesday 7th October our two Year 6 SIG representatives attended the Newport Grand Council Event. They learnt lots about the importance of sustainability and the role we all have to play. They engaged in a number of workshops, including cooking and even recyled pre loved uniform.
Local artist Andy O’Rouke is running a competition that he will create a nature mural for a Newport School. Our fabulous PTA have registered us to be part of this competition, with the hope that we will be the winning school! Please can you take the time to vote for us. To vote you need to follow this link :-
When voting, comment High Cross Primary under the post. Only your first valid comment per person per school counts. Extra comments are ignored. Votes are weighted by school size so every school (large or small) has an equal chance. Share & Like the post to boost our school’s reach. Every extra parent, pupil or neighbour you tag multiplies on chances of winning. Voting ends on October 16th @ 5 pm
Let's get voting HCPS!
We launched Black History month with an assembly about different Welsh Black people who have made a difference in Wales. We listened to Dame Shirley Bassey singing and the story of Betty Campbell- the first Black female head teacher in Wales and Colin Jackson the twice world champion hurdler. We are looking forward to exploring some more black Welsh people who have made a difference in Wales.

We are looking forward to inviting High Cross parents and family members to help us celebrate Diwrnod Shwmae on Wednesday 15 October in the hall 3.30pm - 4.15pm. Criw Cymraeg members are excited to host a 'Paned a sgwrs' (cuppa and a chat). Enjoy a cuppa while learning a tipyn bach o Gymraeg a little bit Welsh.
On Thursday 9th October S.I.G held an assembly to introduce themselves to the school and talk a little about what their interests and hopes are as they undertake their new role. They were excited to share their new song which embraces our core value of care and respect for the environment and for making the school the best it can be from a sustainable perspective. We are very excited about our future projects, watch this space and enjoy listening to our song - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeV5_ndXnOY
The Wellbeing Warriors, for 2025-2026, introduced themselves during an assembly this week. We also shared 'The Zones of Regulation' which we use when we check-in, daily. Our check-in stations enable all our children to consider how they are feeling and offer ways to support them into a calm, ready for learning, zone.
