It has been a long term especially for the Reception children and all the other classes at High Cross, but we are so amazed how we have finished on a high note for half term. A Fantastic Start to the Autumn Term
As we reach the end of a busy and successful first half of the Autumn Term, we would like to thank all of our pupils, families and staff for their hard work, enthusiasm and support. The children have made a wonderful start to the school year and should be very proud of all they have achieved so far.
We wish all of our families a happy, restful and enjoyable half-term break and look forward to welcoming everyone back for another exciting half term when we return on Monday 2nd November 2026. Enjoy your week! 🍂😊
Our School Photographer visited on Monday 12th October to take individual pupil and sibling photographs from Nursery to Year 6. Children were sent home with paper order forms on the day, which displayed each of their photographs and your child's unique code. Orders should be placed online via the Tempest website: http://www.tempest-orders.co.uk/
For free delivery back to the school, you have until Monday 26th October to order. Any orders after this date will incur a delivery charge. If you need any assistance in ordering your photo, please feel free to contact Tempest at customerservice@htempest.co.uk.
Our Year 6 Wellbeing Warriors along with Mrs Salathiel represented the school at the the Newport Autumn Term Grand Council Event, held in the University on Usk Way. The theme was linked to citizenship. The children took part in a series of workshops, including: teamwork, anti-racism, dementia and what to do in emergencies, such as a fire or flood. The children have fed back to Mr Martin and the rest of the Wellbeing Warriors this week and will be looking at how we can use what they've learnt in school, for example playtime activities.
On Thursday 15th October, Year 6 headed off for the morning to attend the Crucial Crew Event held at Raglan Barracks. They engaged in a series of workshops, all with the aim to equip them with knowledge and skills to keep them safe. They worked with the Fire Brigade, Gwent Police, Network Rail, Lifeboats, Electricity Board, Newport Youth Justice Service and many other services. They had a great time and as always were exemplar role models for our school.
On Wednesday 14th October our Head and Deputy pupils along with our Service Family Children worked alongside Reverend Summers to create a wreath, wrote names and made poppies to hang up as a wall hanging, created little poppies for themselves, looked at ration books and did some war time dancing. The names on the poppies were the people from our local area who served and died in the wars. The Head and Deputy boys and girls are invited to attend the St Basil's Remembrance Service on Sunday 8th November 2026 to represent High Cross in the presentation of our wreath at the service. Everyone is welcome to attend this public service of Remembrance, led by Reverend Summers.
Diolch yn fawr to everyone who came to our Noson Gemau to celebrate Diwrnod Shwmae. Criw Cymraeg planned and hosted a noson gwych! It was bendigedig to hear so much Cymraeg. Hapus i siarad Cymraeg. Da iawn pawb for having a go.
We would like to thank all parents and carers who attended our Autumn Term consultation meetings. Your support, engagement and partnership with school are invaluable in helping your child achieve their very best. We very much appreciate the opportunity to discuss your child's progress and how they have setttled into their new class routines. We look forward to continuing to work together throughout the year - 'Together We Grow And Shine'.
We were delighted to come together as a school community to celebrate our Harvest Festival. Every class performed a fantastic item, showcasing their confidence, creativity and hard work through poems, raps or songs. It was a joy to see all of the children taking part and sharing the important messages behind the Harvest season. A special thank you to our Reception families for joining us. We loved sharing this celebration with you and hope that you all enjoyed it too.
As part of our Harvest Festival, this year we collected items for Newport and District Foodbank. They provide emergency food and practical support to people in their hardest moments. They also work with partners and local communities to ensure everyone gets the right help long before they need a food bank. A huge THANK YOU High Cross families for your support again this year. The Newport and District Foodbank were absolutely blown away by the generosity, as were we.
Our PTA held a pre-loved Halloween costume and accessories pop up stall on Tuesday 20th October. It was wonderful to see so many families purchasing from the stall and great to see these items being re-used. We hope that you enjoy your purchases. Thank you to our PTA for organising this excellent initiaitve and to our High Cross families for your support. A fantastic profit of over £100 was made, which will continue to go towards helping us develop the outdoor spaces around the school grounds.
We were delighted to be invited to take part in the Rogerstone Community Council design a Scarecrow competition. All classes have been busy designing and building their Scarecrows using recyclable materials to support our sustainable design. Classes paired together and produced the fantastic Scarecrows which we are very proud to share with you in the photographs. On Thursday afternoon, members of the Rogerstone Community Council visited to view our designs and had the hard decision of choosing a winner. The winning Scarecrow was Bride Betty created by our Early Years classes (Nursery, Reception and Year 1). A huge well done to all of our fabulous High Cross children who have done a splendid job. Da iawn pawb!
We will be supporting the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal fundraising campaign again this year. Money raised in the appeal is used to support the Armed Forces community in lots of different ways, including those in active service, veterans and their families.
Items such as bracelets, keyrings, zip pulls, pin badges and paper poppies will be on sale from Monday 2nd November up until Remembrance Day, 11th November. Coin payments only please.
We will be holding a Book Fair in the school hall on Wednesday 11th November from 3:30pm to 4:00pm and on Thursday 12th November 8.40am - 9.00am. Throughout the week, the children will have the chance to browse the selection of books with their class. We hope you’ll be able to pop in after school to see the wonderful range of books available. Please note: purchases can be made by card payment only.
On Thursday 12th November at 3.30pm we have another Parent/ Carer Workshop taking place in our school hall. This will focus on 'Unpacking Mental Health and Wellbeing' and will be delivered by the InReach team. We hope that you are able to join us.

On Tuesday 13th October 2026 we held our open evening for prospective parents/carers of children who are due to start Reception in September 2027. It was wonderful to welcome familiar and new families to the evening, which also included a full tour of the school, in order for prospective families to see how their child's journey would progress at High Cross Primary School. Thank you to two of our PTA members who supported with refreshements at the event. Your help is very much appreciated.

Please be reminded that rude and disrespectful behaviour towards staff is unacceptable. In the short amount of time of returning back to school this academic year, there have been some instances of parents/carers being rude and disrespectful towards staff. This behaviour is absolutely unnecessary, unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Please treat our staff with the same respect you would expect to receive. Here is a reminder of Communication Code:
When communicating with pupils, parents, carers, staff and all stakeholders, in writing, by phone or in person we will always:
Be polite, respectful and do our best to resolve your questions and queries;
Try to get back to in a timely manner. Please remember our staff are very busy and they have daily teaching commitments. We will always try to get back to you within 48 hours but please understand this is not always possible;
Pass your query on to someone who can help if we are unable to assist you.
In return, we ask that you:
Treat our staff with politeness and respect;
Do not contact us to vent anger or frustration. We understand that something may have caused you or your child distress but please try to communicate with us in a calm and respectful manner to allow us to try to help you quickly and efficiently;
Accept that staff may not be able to respond to you immediately and please remember that we do not expect our staff to work at weekends;
Allow us to explain our reasons for decisions, which are always made in a considered and timely manner.
It is important to note that persistent rude, aggressive or malicious communication will not be tolerated. If such inappropriate communication occurs, it may result in restrictions being imposed by the headteacher (in consultation with the Chair of Governors) on your mode of communication with the school.
Thank you for your understanding with this.
