Croeso!
Welcome back to the High Cross Chronicle, we've had a great two weeks and are very excited for sports day. Sadly it was postponed on Wednesday but now it is on Thursday 4th June. Our Eisttford bach was cancelled but we still heard the amazing singing and other performances by every class. We are getting closer to the end of the school year and summer is getting closer, so thank you and see you two weeks.
Have a great half term!
Deputy Headgirl & Deputy Headboy
Please continue to check the Chronicle for important information and dates for the diary. Please be aware all dates are subject to change.
Tuesday 2nd June - Charity fundraising day for Sparkle
Thursday 4th June - Reserve Sports Day
Friday 17th July - Last day of the Summer Term
INSET DAYS:
Monday 20th July 2026 - School closed to pupils
Our Family Engagement Planner which we shared with you in the Summer Term, has key dates for the academic year, including our INSET days.
Nut Aware School
We would like to remind you that we are a nut aware school and we kindly ask that you ensure that you do not provide your child with any snacks or a packed lunch containing nuts.
RSE Parent/ Carer Workshop
Thank you to those who were able to attend our RSE parent workshop. It was a pleasure to share information about this vital area of learning for our pupils. Just a reminder that on our school website there is a health and wellbeing area which has links to a variety of support networks should you wish to use them.
Eisteddfod Art Exhibition
We the Criw Cymraeg took a long time to prepare for the Eisteddfod bach, including drawing the different sections of the yard for certain things, making the ideas for what we should do and focusing on our main priority - making this a fun event that everyone can enjoy while promoting our Welsh culture and language . We truly enjoyed doing this and it was very fun and we are disappointed that we could not share our hard work with all of you! We are very sorry that this did not go through and we had to cancel due to weather conditions!
However our Eisteddfod Bach celebration was beautifully spotlighted by a spectacular School Art exhibition, showcasing a stunning range of detailed sketches and vibrant paintings inspired by celebrated Welsh artists like Rachel Hannah, Martin Evans, Walls by Paul, Valeriane Leblond and Therese James. The breathtaking creativity and skill on display truly prove that the artistic talent at High Cross is nothing short of bendigedig!
Chess Competition
We went to the Mega Finals in a Cardiff School which is the biggest competition in the UK. When we arrived we waited till the first game started. There were 6 rounds in total. Coby and Hamza got 2.5 points so they got 3RD place for nine year olds and are going to the Giga Finals in London! Noura, Micah, Sarim and Yahya all got points too. In this competition 1 point=1 checkmate, 0.5=1 draw/stalemate , 0 points=1 loss. We really enjoyed it.
Sports Day
Unfortunately due to the amount of rain we've had we had to cancel Sports Day on Wednesday 20th May 2026. However, we have our reserve date scheduled for Thursday 4th June 2026, which we really hope will be able to go ahead. All other information shared in the initial letter and times will remain the same:
Key Stage 2: 9.15am - 11.30am
Foundation Phase: 1.30pm - 3:15pm
All Nursery pupils are asked to attend the afternoon session on this date.
SIG
On Friday 15th May S.I.G unveilled their banner project to the class. We are very proud of the environmental banner which has been designed in collaboration with the whole school. This banner design will now be sent off to Newport City Council who will make 2m x 1m banner for us to display as we would like. We are very excited
Wellbeing Warriors - Charity Fundraising Day
This week in assembly we told everyone about our whole school fundraising event for Sparkle. This takes place on Tuesday 2nd June when children can wear their PE kit and something purple/sparkly. We will be having a fun sports carousel with things like: hula hooping, space hopper racing, free-style dancing, bean bag on the head and much more! All children should have brought a sponsorship form home which can be returned with any money collected by Friday 5th June. We cannot wait, thank you for your support from the Wellbeing Warriors
Online Personalised Assessments
In the second half of the Summer Term children in Year 2 to Year 6 will be completing Online Personalised Assessments for reading, numeracy and reasoning. These statutory assessments are taken on-line and are adaptive, meaning that questions are selected based on the responses to previous questions. This provides a tailored assessment experience for each child. The children will experience familiarisation questions as a whole class beforehand. Their wellbeing is paramount and these assessments should not be a cause of worry. When all assessments have been completed feedback will be shared with parents/ carers via the Hwb platform before the end of the Summer term. Here is a video with more information - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4imAgxjz64
School Uniform
We feel that school uniform helps our pupils to feel part of a community and appreciate your support to ensure that the correct uniform is worn.
Please ensure your child's name is on all items of uniform. It makes it much easier for us to return the items to the correct child.
Winter uniform: White polo t-shirt, a royal blue round-neck sweatshirt or cardigan with or without the school logo, grey trousers, skirt or pinafore dress and black shoes.
Summer uniform: Blue and white gingham dress or grey shorts can be worn.
P.E. kit: Navy shorts or jogging bottoms, a royal blue polo t-shirt with or without the school logo and trainers or daps. Children can wear their P.E. kit to school on their allocated day. Nike Pro style cropped shorts should not be worn.
Jewellery: must be limited to watches (not smart watches) and stud earrings (where necessary). Children must remove all jewellery before they undertake any PE sessions. If ear piercing is still healing, parents must provide tape to cover studs for PE sessions.

A message from Gwent Police NextGen Team
There are four separate workshops on Roblox, Fortnite, EA FC26 and Minecraft that our parents/ carers can access. These workshops equip parents, carers, and others supporting young people with the confidence and knowledge to discuss a wide range of digital activities within these games.
This series takes a deep dive into specific games in detail, designed to look at the key features of the game, appeal to young people, in-game spending and how to utilise the parental settings within some of the most popular games.
These workshops are run by a Charity called YGAM and are really informative and supportive of everyone who registers and takes part in the sessions. Click on the link below to find out more.
This training should be very interesting for parents/ carers to get involved in and hopefully help at home with discussions around certain games.
When communicating with pupils, parents, carers, staff and all stakeholders, in writing, by phone or in person we will always:
Be polite, respectful and do our best to resolve your questions and queries;
Try to get back to in a timely manner. Please remember our staff are very busy and they have daily teaching commitments. We will always try to get back to you within 48 hours but please understand this is not always possible;
Pass your query on to someone who can help if we are unable to assist you.
In return, we ask that you:
Treat our staff with politeness and respect;
Do not contact us to vent anger or frustration. We understand that something may have caused you or your child distress but please try to communicate with us in a calm and respectful manner to allow us to try to help you quickly and efficiently;
Accept that staff may not be able to respond to you immediately and please remember that we do not expect our staff to work at weekends;
Allow us to explain our reasons for decisions, which are always made in a considered and timely manner.
It is important to note that persistent rude, aggressive or malicious communication will not be tolerated. If such inappropriate communication occurs, it may result in restrictions being imposed by the headteacher (in consultation with the Chair of Governors) on your mode of communication with the school.
Thank you for your understanding with this.
