Croseo!
Welcome to this week's edition of the High Cross Primary Chronicle, where we celebrate achievements, share milestones, and reflect on the vibrant life of our school community. Pupils have been very happy because as we roll into the summer term the weather is warmer and we are finally allowed to play on our field! Also the lovely chess children have got certificates for taking part in a chess tournement and Noura has got a trophy for having the most points in the WHOLE SCHOOL, well done to her! What a busy and exciting start to the summer term.
Best regards, Nia and Neve

Our Family Engagement Planner which we shared with you in the Summer Term, has key dates for the academic year, including our INSET days.
A new term and that means new Class Themes. Last week our Summer Term Class Newsletter were shared with you on your child's class Dojo page and Homework Menus that align to their theme were shared on Google Classroom. We hope you find this information a useful insight into our experiences.
Themes across the school for the Summer Term are as follows:
Nursery: Bugs and Blossoms
Reception: Sunshine and growing things
Year 1: Living and Growing - looking closer
Year 2: Yn y gwyllt
Year 3: The wonders of wildlife
Year 4: What's the problem?
Year 5: Ocean life - Investigating ocean life and its impact
Year 6: Survival - The great outdoors!
Each new theme starts with an exciting 'Sparkly Starter' to immerse the children in the theme and to enable them to have a voice on driving the planning forwards. I am sure you will agree there is an exciting range of themes taking place across the school.
Our school photographer is visiting school on Tuesday 12th May. During this visit they will take whole class photographs for every class from Nursery to Year 6. They will also take individual photographs of Year 6 Leavers'.
A reminder that we have two INSET days coming up when school will be closed to all pupils. These are taking place on Friday 1st May and Tuesday 5th May. School will also be closed to everyone on Monday 4th May as it is a Bank Holiday. We have one final INSET day on Monday 20th July.

Fire Safety Talk Year 2 and Year 5
Year 2 and Year 5 enjoyed an informative and intersting talk from the fire brigade, linked to the importance of not making fake calls and also what services they actually provide. Of course our favourite part was exploring the fire truck and having a go with the hose!
No 2 Racism Cluster Collaboration
This week Year 5 and Year 6 had a visit group of Bassaleg School's N2R members. They delivered a short presentation to both classes and then spent time on the yard talking with our children and supporting their learning. The aim of the visit is to build partnership within the cluster and to share our 'No Outsiders' school work with Bassaleg School, which is embedded in our whole school ethos at High Cross. The thoughtful contributions and questions posed by our children were a privilege to witness and the message that 'Everyone belongs' at High Cross was portrayed very clearly to our visitors. Thank you to Bassaleg for visiting us to share your fantastic work and well done to our fabulous High Cross children.
Understanding Emotions Workshop
Year 5 and 6 had the first of their Health and Wellbeing workshops this week which are part of the extended transition process. We were lucky to have CAMHS Mental Health In-Reach to Schools Team come in to High Cross to deliver this offer. Both classes experienced a workshop with the theme Understanding Emotions and Year 6 have another workshop on Monday with the theme of Transitions.
Month of the Military Child
April is recognised as the Month of the Military Child, a time to honour the resilience of children from armed forces families. The "dandelion" features as the official flower symbolising their ability to blossom wherever they land. Our choir after school club and as a whole school in assembly this week we have enjoyed singing 'Now I'm thanking you' which was written by Service children at the South Wales Armed Forces Festival.
Year 2 Local Walk
Year 2 ignited their theme with a sprakly starter walk to the 14 locks. The children planned their route using an ordance survey map and were fully engaged in following their route. Well done everyone for spotting landmarks on route and fully immersing ourselves with being in the wild. Yn y Gwyllt!
Chess Competition
Some of the children from chess club took part in a school to school friendly with St Woolos Primary School. We were very warmly welcomed and even had snacks and a play on their new climbing frame! As for the chess matches, everyone showed huge focus and amazing thinking skills, stretching their opponents to the max! Overall we had 8 wins and 3 draws whilst St Woolos had 13 wins and 3 draws - so it was very close!
It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to experience competing with pupils from another school and we hope to repeat this by inviting St Woolos to join us for the return match! A super well done to Caleb, Noura, Phoebe, Tommy, Evelyn, Sarim, Hamza, Micah, Reuben, Coby, Savannah and Yahya.
Ukulele Fun in Year 3
On Wednesday 22nd April Year 3 started a 10 week block of work based on the Ukulele. This has been provided by Gwent Music. We had a great first session learning the different parts of the instrument and how to strum. We learnt about the correct way to hold one and what the names of each of the strings were. Our first piece was the Thumb Brush Strum. Well done Year 3 we cant wait for next week already!
Eisteddfod Bach
We are excited to share with you plans for our Eisteddfod Bach, taking place on Friday 15th May 2026. Weather permitting, you are invited to join us from 1.15pm - 3,15pm. All you need to bring is a picnic blanket, chairs and a mini picnic of your choice, then leave the rest to us. We plan to celebrate our Welsh Heritage on the school field through whole class perfomances on the stage, welsh dancing, our choir singing, an art exhibitiion, paned y sgwrs and several activities for you to explore with your child(ren) around the grounds towards the end.
Throughout the afternoon all classes will be able to view the art exhibition in the hall with their families, which will celebrate the children's wonderful artwork. The times for this are as follows:
2pm - Nursery and Reception
2.15pm - Year 1 and Year 2
2.30pm - Year 3 and Year 5
2.45pm - Year 4
3pm - Year 6
If you are unable to join us for the afternoon, the art exhibition will still be displayed for you to view in the school hall from 3.15pm when you collect your child.
Charity Fundraising Day
Our whole school charity fundraising event for our chosen charity 'Sparkle' is taking place on Tuesday 2nd June 2026. Our Wellbeing Warriors are taking the lead to plan this event for the whole school, which will involve sponsorships. We will keep you updated as these exciting plans progress.
Gwyl Newydd
Menter Iaith Casnewydd are hosting a Welsh festival by the name Gwyl Newydd on the 13th of June, 11am to 7pm at Rodney Parade in Newport.
There will be Live music from Welsh-language bands, children’s and family entertainment, hands-on creative activities, local stalls, food, and crafts. Gŵyl Newydd is open to everyone. It is part of a wider movement to grow and strengthen the Welsh language in Newport.
We have noticed an increase in children bringing in resources such as ear defenders, teddies and fidget toys. Any sensory equipment or other resources must be agreed, prior to any such items being brought into school. A conversation needs to take place between parents/carers and staff so that your child's needs can be discussed and appropriate ways forward agreed. Any agreed resources brought into school should not be distracting for other pupils.
New NHS Text Service for Parents and Carers
The School Nursing Service at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board are excited to launch Parent/CarerLine, a new SMS text service for parents and carers of children aged 5 to 16. Parents and carers can text (SMS) the school nurses for expert advice and support with a child's health and wellbeing. They also have a confidential text service for young people aged 11 – 19.
For more information on both services and to find out how our school nurses can support your child, visit: https://abuhb.nhs.wales/hospitals/childrens-healthcare-services/school-nursing/
Our PTA also sell preloved uniform which you can call into the school office to purchase or email the PTA: highcrossprimarypta@gmail.com
School Uniform
We feel that school uniform helps our pupils to feel part of a community and appreciate your support to ensure that the correct uniform is worn.
Please ensure your child's name is on all items of uniform. It makes it much easier for us to return the items to the correct child.

Summer uniform: Blue and white gingham dress or grey shorts can be worn.
