The atmosphere was filled with joy as we sang songs together, closing our assembly with a heartfelt rendition of the Bard. The rest of the day was dedicated to fun, Welsh-based activities, including baking delicious Welsh cakes and crafting beautiful daffodils. It was a wonderful day celebrating our rich culture and heritage!
World Book Day
Our World Book Day celebration was amazing!
It was wonderful to see so many children showing their love of reading, both through their enthusiasm for books and their fantastic costumes as their favourite characters. The excitement and creativity throughout the day made it a really special event for everyone.
A big thank you to all the families who were able to join us for our Big Share. It was so lovely to see parents and carers reading with their children and enjoying stories together.
Partner Network School - Embedding Froebelian occupations from Nursery to Year 2
On Tuesday 3rd March we were delighted to welcome teachers from other settings to our school to share the journey we have made with the Froebelian occupations, including sewing, woodwork, cooking, block play and clay. A big thank to Mrs Oaten and Mrs Glencross for presenting, and to all our staff who shared the Froebelian Occupations within their beautiful learning environments.
Partner Network School - CPA at High Cross Primary
On Wednesday 4th March we enjoyed sharing with staff from other schools in South Wales about our maths journey at High Cross. We explained how we use the concrete pictorial and abstract approach . This involves using lots of practical resources, pictures and thinking skills to embed mathematical concepts. The visitors were very impressed with the children's ability to explain what they were doing in their maths lessons.
Grand Council Event
Written by Phoebe and Noura
On Wednesday 11th March we attended the Grand Council Event at Llanwern High School. It was attended by lots of different schools in Newport. We found out a lot of history about Newport, made leek and potato soup, learnt how to rap and planned our own mini Eisteddfod. We were given a poster of the "Rights of a child" to display in school also. We really enjoyed it!
We couldn't choose a 'best bit' because it was all amazing!!
Year 6 WWII Workshop
On Monday 8th March Year 6 had a great start to the week. Mr King (Josiah's Dad) joined us for the morning to teach us lots about WWII, including local connections to Rogerstone and Newport. We all found it extremely interesting. We had a lots of practical activities to join in with, such as making model shelters and got to hold and try on lots of authentic artefacts from the time. We all learnt something new. Thank you Mr King for the wonderful workshop.
Year 5 Old Testament Mini Explorers
Year 5 are thoroughly enjoying their weekly Old Testament story sessions. They get to join in with the storytelling and have learnt lots of actions to help us remember characters and events.
Year 6 Residential
Today Year 6 returned from their long awaited residential trip to Llangrannog. It certainly lived up to expectations and more. 12 adventurous activities completed across 3 days, including quad biking, horse riding, zip wire, bush craft, climbing and archery to name a few. Each activity not only saw the children enjoying new experiences, but also challenging themselves to overcome fears. They certainly had a 'can do' attitude throughout the trip. Dry slope skiing was a new experience for everyone (adults included). It was lovely to see Year 6 children from some of our cluster primary schools' who were there at the same time as us. Year 6 have been an absolute credit to High Cross Primary and their families, which was noticed by several of the Llangrannog staff and other visiting schools. We are extremely proud of them. We are sure the children have all captured their own special memories which they will treasure. Da iawn Year 6 Superstars!
Staffing update
As you will be aware, Mrs Oaten has successfully secured a secondment position with the Local Authority. In-light of this, we are pleased to announce that Miss Penson will be taking over the role in Nursery. Miss Penson has previously worked in our Nursery and she knows the routines and day‑to‑day practices very well. She has a strong understanding of early years pedagogy, which will support the continuation of high‑quality learning experiences for the children.
