Welcome back everyone! It has been an absolute pleasure to see our wonderful High Cross children after the half term. We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break. We certainly have a very busy but equally exciting second half of the spring term ahead; class trips and workshops, St David's Day, World Book Day (including our Big Book Share with yourselves), parent/ carer consultations, the year 6 residential visit, Eid, Easter Bonnet Parade and lots of great learning experiences planned each day. The children have returned refreshed and ready to learn. Thank you families for your continued support. It really is appreciated.
Year 6 at Bassaleg
We thoroughly enjoyed another transition visit to Bassaleg School on Wednesday 11th February to watch their Gym and Dance display. What incredible talent was displayed by pupils from year 7 to 13. The show included a whole range of dance; ballet, jazz, hip hop, lyrical to name a few and a number of amazing gymnastic routines. It was wonderful to see some of our past High Cross pupils in the show.
Year 4 and Year 6 pupils did an incredible job taking part in the Cerdd Iaith showcase. They performed a wonderful variety of songs all about food, singing in Welsh, French, German and Italian. We’re so proud of how hard they worked to learn all the different languages, they were brilliant!
A huge thank you to all the parents and families who came along to watch our final performance showcase.
Year 1 St Fagans Trip
Our Year 1 children had a wonderful trip to St Fagans on Thursday 12th February to further enhance their theme 'Y Gartref' for this term. It was a fantastic day from start to finish. The children had the opportunity to compare houses from the past with their own home and experienced a workshop entitled ‘Beti Bwt’s Washday.’ Since being back in school we have been inspired to use our own wash station, comparing how we wash our clothes now with how washing was done in the past.
Year 2 Roman Museum trip
Year 2 had an absolutely superb day at the Caerleon Roman museum, amphitheatre and baths. The children were incredible with their curiousity, interest enthusiasm and behaviour. They were a credit to our school. Diolch Blwyddyn 2.
Year 3 Caerphilly Castle Trip
Year 3 had a wonderful trip to Caerphilly Castle on Wednesday 25th February. We were greeted by the owner of the Castle, Sir Gilbert de Clare (dressed in full armour) who took us around and told us about the Castle History. We enjoyed looking at armour, climbing towers and a full interactive session in the Great Hall.
Year 2 Yoga
We had a wonderful PE session linked to our value of the month humility enjoying yoga with Lucy. Look at their happy faces😀 A huge thank you to Lucy for sharing her knowledge and expertise.
SIG Community Orchard
Rebecca Williams, Our Local Places for Nature officer, came to work with S.I.G this afternoon teaching us to prune to be able to look after the news trees planted in our school grounds last year. We all enjoyed learning new skills.
Eisteddfod
On Tuesday we kicked off our Dydd Gwyl Dewi celebrations with poetry and pride. Llongyfrachiadau, congratulations to our Creative Poetry winners for sharing such inspiring work. Diolch for all the amazing art entries. Bobl Bach! Goodness me! It was challenging for our Criw Cymraeg members to judge and they will look forward to announcing the winners during our Dydd Gwyl Dewi celebration assembly on Monday 2nd March. On Monday we will also look forward to hearing the solo singing and Welsh recital poetry winners. On Monday 2nd March, children are invited to wear red, white, green or traditional Welsh dress as part of our Dydd Gwyl Dewi celebrations. On Monday 2nd March, Criw Cymraeg will be hosting a special Dydd Gwyl Dewi assembly followed by Welsh themed activities in class.

Toilet Refurbishment
The children returned after the half term to see quite a change in the KS2 building corridor. We are excited to be having the KS2 girls toilets refurbished, which will include new toilets, cubicles, basins, flooring and a separate cubicle with disabled access. The project is well underway and will hopefully be finished by the end of next week.
World Book Day
On Thursday 5th March our hall will be turning into an exciting library. There will be welcoming nooks and snugs for parents/ carers to sit, relax and enjoy reading a variety of books together with their child. Please see the timetable sent previously in this World Book Day letter.
Children are welcome to dress as their favourite book character and we encourage creative upcycling where possible.
We really hope you are able to come along and join the fun!

Mrs Higgs
We would like to say 'BIG' congratulations to Mrs Oaten (from Nursery) who has successfully secured a two year secondment with the Local Authority as an ALN Early Years Inclusion Advisor. We are very proud of Mrs Oaten for securing this position and we know she is going to do an outstanding job in her new role, just as she has done an outstanding job at High Cross. We will of course miss her whilst she is away on her secondment but we wish her every succeess.

Parent/ Carer Consultations
Parent/carer consultations will take place the week commencing Monday 16th March 2026.
