Hour of Code

Old Country Road Elementary Participates in the Hour of Code

Old Country Road participates  school-wide in the Hour of Code every year in the beginning of December. Our students joined millions of children worldwide in computer science activities that are crucial for today's learners. They used problem solving strategies, cause and effect relationships, and other skills to solve puzzles. The students have enjoyed this initiative for  years now under the direction of Tina Villalobos, the 2nd-5th grade ENL teacher, and Corinne Mikulin, the school library media specialist. Both teachers enjoy computer science and integrate it within their instructional programs. Mrs. Villalobos loves the program and remarked, "Our students can't wait for the Hour of Code week and many of them continue to use the coding games at home. These types of activities create a love of coding which could give our students the edge they need in future careers." This generation has had computers and other technological devices since they were toddlers. It is a part of their daily lives, both at home and in school.  "The Hour of Code gives students a chance to thrive regardless of their academic performance on paper.", said Mrs. Mikulin. There are activities for all children of all academic abilities and even visual impairments, from Kindergarten through High School. "The students have already asked me what we are doing next year.", said Mrs. Villalobos.
