Services for gifted and high achieving students look different in the middle school as compared to elementary school. Students will receive most of their services through a differentiated curriculum within their Advanced English Language Arts class and their Advanced Math class. Students will be challenged within other content courses by being asked to learn the material in a different way, produce a different product to demonstrate mastery, or given the opportunity to dive deeper into a topic of interest related to the unit being studied. The work that gifted students are being asked to do and produce is DIFFERENT work, not more work. The AIG specialist may pull students into small groups or may be part of an inclusion model within the Advanced ELA and Math classes. The AIG specialist works with teachers to provide instruction that is challenging and engaging.
Some of the activities that students may be involved in can include:
Battle of the Books
MathCounts
Socratic Seminar
TED Talks
STEAM / STEM Projects
Genius Hour
Competitions
Enrichment / Extensions Canvas Course
AIG students have a yearly review of their Differentiated Education Plan. This presentation explains the purpose of the DEP and what your child's teachers will be doing to challenge and engage your child.
This enrichment group is given the opportunity to read and discuss novels that are thought provoking and relevant to their middle school and future high school experience.
Students that contribute to this website have completed all iReady Reading lessons through the end of 8th grade content. Students are then provided a novel to read as a Book Club. They meet once a week to discuss the novel and any questions they may have.
When they complete the book, students volunteer to write different parts of the book review. Once they have completed the book review, it is peer edited and then posted on this website to encourage other young readers to take a part in the adventure that lies within the covers of each book.
