Students following the Green Options route will have one Option block given over to our Skills Package. Each year we review the content of the package in order to ensure that it best suits the needs of the students to support their studies. In 2023 we made changes to this option as part of our wider Thrive and Fly academic intervention programme and this package primarly focuses on two areas, developing Literacy Skills and Mathematics.
Students work with specially trained staff members on developing their literacy skills such as reading and comprehension to ensure they can fully access GCSE papers across their wider curriculum. Using the nationally standardised NGRT reading tests and our reading fluency programmes we may have identified your child would benefit from this support to raise their reading age and help support them accessing GCSE papers, some of which have a reading age of over 17 years old.
Students work with fully qualified Mathematics teachers to spend more time focusing on key concepts that may have been identified as gaps in knowledge or where students are lacking in confidence. Students use the time to undertake a Level 1 Functional Skills qualification which once passed can be move up to a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in Year 11. Criticially, students still study GCSE Mathematics as usual with their classmates but these additional sessions will help support classroom understanding and develop confidence to pass GCSE Mathematics.
Other Options
For 2024-25, we are introducing additional options where students may benefit from spending time focusing on wider organisation or personal skills with a member of our learning support team. This option is fluid depending on the needs of the individuals in the group however they may work towards other qualifications such as the Princes Trust Achieve Programme.
