About Me

Biography

I am a history and sociology teacher here at Homewood Flossmoor High School. I have been at H-F for about 12 years now, but my story of how I got here is a long and complicated one! I began working at H-F as Permanent Substitute in 2006, where I was able to teach a little bit of many different courses at the school. In 2010, I took a history teacher position at Naperville North High School. But that move was only temporary. I had my triumph return 2012, when I was hired to teach World History, US History, and Sociology at H-F. Throughout my tenure as a teacher , I have coached both boys and girls soccer at levels.

Some other background information about me, I have lived my entire life in the same 5 mile radius. I grew up in Orland Park and attended Carl Sandburg High School. I then continued to live at and commuted to Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, where I studied History Education. I now live in Tinley Park with with my wife, my daughter, my newborn son, and my dog.

Outside of work, I like to spend time with my family, i like to read, and I like to watch and talk about sports! My favorite sports teams are the Chicago Cubs, Blackhawks, Bears, and Arsenal (English Soccer team).

As a little bonus info... I am kind of a tech nerd. I am all about Google and Android! I kind of have an obsession (Some of my students refer to me as "Google" Smit).
