Course Description

This course studies the chronological development of American literature, including the most important prose, poetry and drama of each period. The course will also emphasize written and oral expression, the development of listening skills, and the refinement of vocabulary and editing skills. Students will prepare for the Regents Comprehensive Examination in English.

Course Objectives

Through this course, students will learn to:

    • Know what to look for when reading and analyzing fiction and non-fiction.
    • Apply writing skills to a multitude of different prompts and tasks.
    • “Read” a variety of texts, both written and visual.
    • Speak and listen with purpose, to themselves and their peers.
    • Understand language and vocabulary—how to use it and how it’s used.
