ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Center for Research, Documentation and Information of Natural Hazards aims to investigate and document natural disasters that affect Israel in order to prepare a database that will help limit damage and prepare for disasters and post-disaster rehabilitation. These activities will enhance and reinforce national resilience regarding natural disasters. While the disasters themselves are unpreventable, it is certainly possible to reduce their negative impact.

The Center collects information concerning different types of natural disasters: earthquakes, floods, forest fires, landslides, droughts, and winter storms. The information will be collated in a database providing researchers, workers in the field, and decision makers in various fields in Israel with a vital tool for their actions. This database is of particular importance to those addressing this subject in the education system and will enable cumulative experience to be passed on to future generations.

The Center operates under the auspices of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Haifa and has received a seed grant from the Minerva Foundation.

The Center will be grateful to receive any information from institutions or private individuals relating to natural disasters that have occurred in Israel since the establishment of the state or in other historical periods.

The Center is headed by Professor Moshe Inbar from the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Haifa.
