This page will answer frequently asked questions about the Heritage Academy Laveen Golf Programs.
When do the HAL Golf Teams Compete?
The Junior High Golf Team plays in the fall, while the High School Golf Team plays in the spring. Both compete as Co-Ed teams.
Which leagues govern the HAL teams?
The Junior High Team is a member of the Great Hearts Middle School League (GHMSL). The High School Team is a member of the Arizona Interscholastic Association as a Division 3 team (AIA D3)
How can I follow the HAL teams during the season?
The High School Golf Team plays their home matches at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen, Arizona. Away matches vary season to season. All current scheduled matches are listed in the team calendar. If you are unable to attend a match in person, you can follow the team and the athletes through iWanamaker. More information can be found on the
Scoreboard tab.
Can my scholar join the golf team if they have no experience or equipment?
Both Golf teams are try-out teams, but scholars can join the team with no prior experience. Coach Cucciarre and Coach Gale will help teach the basics during class and practice time, but it will be up to the scholar and their families to get them any extra help they may need outside of the school, depending on the level of dedication. The school and the team own a small assortment of equipment they can loan out to athletes as needed, but it is typically up to the family to provide the necessary equipment for the scholars in order to participate.
How is a Golf Match Scored?
Golf is a unique scoring sport. Athletes are scored both as an individual and as a team. Five athletes compete in a match, with the best four scores taken for a team score. However, individual scores are recorded for an individual score. Every athlete has a reason to shoot their best score at every match. The iWanamaker rankings determine who can qualify for the state tournament.
How do HAL athletes qualify for the State Tournament?
The teams that qualify are the top of each division, with the following eight at large teams gaining a bid to the tournament. After that, the next 15 individuals not on a qualifying team are invited to participate in the state tournament.
How many matches can a HAL athlete play in a single season?
The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) allows for 14 regular season matches in a season for a high school athlete before the state competition occurs. The Junior High will compete in 8 regular season contests before the state tournament begins.
