Mauritius

By Fionnlagh Springett

One of the best things about my family is that we get to call many different places “home” because my dad’s job takes us all over the world. We lived on an amazing island for five years -- what a life!

Mauritius is a small isolated island. It only has 1,350,000 people on the island. Mauritius is 2000km off the Southeastern coast of Africa. Its exact coordinates are 20.1609S, 57.5012E.

Mauritius gained independence in 1968 from the UK. They created a national flag which was called the ‘Les Quatre Bandes’. The red stands for the blood of the slaves. The blue stands for the sky and the sea. The yellow stands for the blazing hot sun. Finally, the green stands for the lush green leaves and grass.

The spinner dolphins are native to Mauritius. They dance in the water in the morning. They also have huge coral reefs. In Port Louis, which is the capital, lionfish can sometimes be seen.

Not everyone can live here, but I highly recommend it as a vacation spot!
