One year our principal challenged us to make a positive call home for each student every 6 weeks. This was transforming to me as a teacher. I started with one student and I called and told them very positive things about their child. The next morning the dad was sitting outside my classroom before I even stepped foot in the building. My first thought was..oh noo what did I do. The dad stood up, gave me a hug, and had tears in his eyes. He said that was the FIRST positive phone call his child has ever had. I didn't have kids in school yet but as my own children have gone through school I have had one who gets tons of praise and the other not so much. I feel the dad's sentiment.
