Meet Mr. Chávez — Spanish Teacher

¡Hola, Oakland Families! My name is Humberto Chávez Araya, but you can call me Mr. Chávez. I'm originally from Chile, where I studied to become an English teacher and later earned a master's degree in how the brain learns. I'm certified in Spanish and ESOL here in Georgia, and this year I was honored as Henry County's H.E.A.R.T. Teacher of the Year.

I teach Spanish to every grade, kindergarten through 5th, using songs, movement, and storytelling to help students learn to actually speak and understand the language — not just memorize words.

I care most about making sure every student feels welcome in my classroom, including students with different learning needs, and that they have fun while discovering a new language.

¡Hola, familias de Oakland! Mi nombre es Humberto Chávez Araya, pero pueden llamarme Mr. Chávez. Soy originario de Chile, donde estudié para ser profesor de inglés y más tarde obtuve una maestría sobre cómo aprende el cerebro. Estoy certificado en Español e ESOL aquí en Georgia, y este año tuve el honor de ser nombrado Maestro del Año H.E.A.R.T. del condado de Henry.

Enseño español a todos los grados, desde kínder hasta 5to, usando canciones, movimiento y narración de cuentos para ayudar a los estudiantes a realmente hablar y entender el idioma — no solo memorizar palabras.

Lo que más me importa es que cada estudiante se sienta bienvenido en mi salón de clases, incluyendo a estudiantes con diferentes necesidades de aprendizaje, y que se diviertan mientras descubren un nuevo idioma.
