AP and Honors Open House at WHS, typically a three hour "night" in January, provides rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors (current 9, 10, 11th grade students) and their parents an opportunity to meet and speak with teachers of Honors and AP courses to decide if the course is right for them. Teachers review the main content of the course, special projects and requirements, and answer general questions.
Registration is a three part process. In a typical year (without COVID restrictions) parents and students would
1.) Attend an in person open house at WHS and meet teachers (this website is taking place of that)
2.) Complete a duplicate paper application on which current teachers sign their approval and return to the counseling office. Applications will be available for pick up in the counseling office beginning January 24 and must be returned by January 27, 2022.
3.) Meet with a counselor to complete the registration process . Students will begin meeting with their counselors by cohort year:
2023 Jan 31-Feb 4
2024 Feb 7-11
2025 Feb 14-18
We recommend that all students attend as many sessions as possible - taking more challenging classes with a higher rigor level helps to gain access to the HOPE scholarship and are looked on more favorably by colleges and universities. Students can make changes to their schedule up to the last day of the school year, which is May 27, 2022. After that time, the appeal protocol for removal from an Honors or AP course must be followed. **It is important for you to review this document so you understand that the Honors or AP course is a year long committment.**
Henry County Schools recognizes the rigor in Honors and AP courses and adds quality points as a result. For cohort years of 2023 and beyond, GPA is calculated on a 4.0 scale, so the quality points are weighted, rather than the numeric average. For example: A student who scores an A in US History would receive 4 quality points, Honors US History would receive 4.5 quality points, and AP US History would receive 5 quality points. For more information on the Henry County Schools change from numeric scale GPA to 4.0 scale GPA beginning with graduating year 2023, please click here: HCS Grading System
There are a few scenarios for which a student may take an AP course online through Georgia Virtual School (GAVS): schedule conflicts which cannot be resolved, WHS does not offer the AP course a student is interested in, or there were not enough students who signed up for the course to allow us to offer it. In the last case, if students have signed up for a course at WHS but we cannot offer it, those students will be given the option to take the course online or to replace the class with another choice. This generally happens during the summer, so the schedule can be set prior to the beginning of the school year. To see a list of course offerings through GAVS, please click here. Note that Honors level courses are NOT available at GAVS.
