Class overview
The health science is a career pathway that introduces students to the broad field of healthcare and prepares them for potential careers in the medical field. It covers topics like human anatomy, physiology, disease prevention, medical terminology, and patient care. Students gain knowledge and skills related to various health occupations.
Introduction to health careers:
Students gain employability skills, explore different career paths within the healthcare industry, such as nursing, pharmacy, and medical assisting, cultural and ethical considerations in healthcare.
Core concepts:
2nd year courses often cover human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes and continue to learn about employability skills.
Practical skills:
Students may learn basic medical procedures, first aid, CPR, and patient care techniques.
Work-based learning: 3rd year students
Some programs incorporate opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience through internships, shadowing, or volunteer work in healthcare settings.
HOSA (Future Health Professionals):
At WHS we integrate HOSA, a student organization, to further enhance students' knowledge and skills in health science.
About me
Welcome to the wonderful world of healthcare science! My name is Sharon Murray, and this is my fourth year of teaching at Woodland High School. I received my Master of Education degree from University of Georgia, Bachelor of Science in Healthcare from Clayton State University and a diploma in Medical Assisting from Ga Medical Institute. Before teaching, I worked as a back office clinical Medical Assistant for seventeen years in the areas of pediatrics, orthopedics and family medicine. I come to you with a wealth of knowledge and passion for healthcare and I can’t wait to share experiences with you.
