Start with the Teacher: This is always the first step. "I'm concerned about [reading/math/behavior]. Can we talk about what you're seeing in class and review the data?"
Engage in Tier 2: If the data shows a need, partner with the teacher during the Tier 2 intervention. Ask the questions listed above. Monitor the progress data with the teacher.
Request an SST (Tier 3) Meeting: If the Tier 2 data doesn't show enough progress, ask the teacher or principal to convene a formal Student Support Team (SST) meeting. You can also request this by contacting your school's MTSS Assistant Principal or SST Chairperson.
Attend the SST Meeting: Prepare to share your insights and review all the data. The team (including you) will create a more intensive, formal plan.
Review and Decide: The SST will meet again to review the Tier 3 data. At this point, the team will decide to:
Continue the successful intervention.
Try a new, different intervention.
Refer the student for a Special Education evaluation (with your written consent).
Your child's school is the primary point of contact and the best way to receive support. If you have specific questions about supports or interventions for your child, please contact your child's school for more information.
