Leveled Readers

Books in the Lilac Band are wordless books that tell stories or give information through pictures. These books will help children explore and develop the vocabulary and language patterns of stories as well as begin to discuss characters and suggest how the story might end. Children may move between Lilac and Pink band books as you address different aspects of early reading. Includes 8 books at each band, 16 pages. Both fiction and non-fiction strands are available. Ages 3+

The pink banded books are for children just starting to read. Children on the pink band will be getting used to reading from left to right and matching spoken words to written words. Books within this band will have short, simple and predictable text, repetitive sentence structures including high frequency words and a large print size with clear spaces between words. Illustrations will help provide full and direct support for the text. Includes 8 books at each band, 16 pages. Both fiction and non-fiction strands are available. Ages 4+

With Red banded readers, children will gain more confidence, starting to modify their own reading, reading more rhythmically and may know some more sight words. Books within this band will have slightly longer text than that of Pink banded books and fiction text will contain simple story development. Includes 8 books at each band, 16 pages. Both fiction and non-fiction strands are available. Ages 4+

Children on the Yellow Band will be reading more varied sentence structures and taking more note of punctuation. They will be noting familiar words and phonemes and using these to read unknown words. Fiction and Non Fiction are available. Ages 4+

Blue banded readers, children will gain more confidence in reading. With longer and more varied sentences and managing a greater variety of genre, they will be self-correcting more rapidly, solving new words using their understanding of the text and re-reading to enhance phrasing and clarify meanings. Books within this band have a greater variation in sentence patterns and content; stories will have more events and there will be more lines of text on a page. Ages 5 and up.

Children at Green band level will be reading more fluently and paying more attention to varied punctuation. Children's comprehension skills at this level will also be increasing and able to handle plots that are more complex. Ages 5 and up.

Children at Orange band level can read longer phrases and sentences that are more complex. The books at this level use more range in punctuation and text layout. Stories at this level are longer with more complex sentence structure. Ages 5 and up

At Turquoise level, stories have sentences that are more complex for fluent readers, with more complex words and varied punctuation. Pages contain larger bodies of text and less reliance on pictures to tell the story. Includes 8 books at each band, 16 pages. Both fiction and non-fiction strands are available. Ages 6+

At Purple band level, children are reading more quickly and keeping track of sentences with punctuation. Books in this band have longer, complex sentences, vocabulary that is more complex and more developed characters. Includes 8 books at each band, 16 pages. Both fiction and non-fiction strands are available. Ages 6+

At Gold band level, children are predicting content and story development and tackling new words. Books at this level are more challenging than at Purple level. Non-Fiction texts will cover increasing curriculum topics. Fiction texts will broaden vocabulary. Ages 6+
