Although my first block is officially designated as a planning period, I actively assist Ms. Martin, the Assistant Band Director, with the Concert Band—a primarily freshman ensemble dedicated to developing foundational musical skills. When necessary, I also work with beginner students individually, preparing them to integrate into the ensemble by the subsequent semester or academic year.
Second block is dedicated to the Symphonic Band, which includes all freshmen who participate in the marching band, along with a number of upperclassmen. This ensemble is one of two primary performing groups at Dutchtown High School that participate in the Georgia Music Educators Association’s Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE). When I am not assisting Ms. Martin with this ensemble, I lead Music Theory instruction, which transitions into AP Music Theory in the spring semester.
Third and fourth blocks are dedicated to Wind Symphony, the premier performing ensemble at Dutchtown High School. Admission into this ensemble is by audition only, and it comprises our most advanced student musicians. The repertoire performed is on par with that of top-performing high school ensembles nationwide, often including Grade 6 literature and masterworks, as required by school administration. The Wind Symphony represents Dutchtown at distinguished events that demand a high level of artistry, excellence, and professionalism. While the musical demands are rigorous, the talent and dedication of these students consistently rise to meet—and exceed—the challenge.
The Dutchtown High School Marching Band, widely known as The Sound of Dutchtown, serves as the musical ambassador of the school. Representing the institution at football games, parades, and various community and ceremonial events, the ensemble embodies the spirit and pride of Dutchtown High School.
The marching band has had the honor of performing on international and national stages, including a trip to Normandy, France to participate in the D-Day Commemoration and related festivities. Most recently, in December 2024, the ensemble traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii to perform in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade and Festival.
As an extracurricular ensemble, the marching band operates with the vital support of the DHS Band Booster Club, whose financial assistance helps make these enriching experiences possible.
The DHS Jazz Band is a 20-piece ensemble dedicated to the study and performance of jazz and popular music styles. Through a diverse repertoire that includes swing, Latin, funk, and blues, students develop improvisational skills, stylistic interpretation, and ensemble performance techniques. The group performs at school concerts, community events, and regional festivals, showcasing the versatility and musicianship of its members.
