Besides the information on the above logos here are some other ideas:

Ongoing Opportunities

Evelyn D. Reinhart Guest House provides hospitality to families who have loved ones receiving medical care. Their website is: https://reinharthouse.org/get-involved/volunteer/

Students may volunteer to prepare a meal, bake cookies or create cards for residents. Information on the meal and baking guidelines can be found here:  https://reinharthouse.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/2019_EDRGH_Meal_and_Baking_Guidelines.pdf

For information contact:  scott_chasteen@bshsi.org. If you require immediate attention, please call 804-287-7300.

Hospital to go bags for Reinhart guests– add items like health snack, bottle of water, kind note, small puzzle book, pen, hand sanitizer, Kleenex. These are suggestions, but the bag can be even simpler with just a health snack and bottle of water. The key is adding a creative touch like handwritten note or decorating the bag

Unit Care Boxes for Nursing Units – this is larger, accommodating 20. Recommended items for box include coffee Keurig pods (nurses love coffee!), tea bags, Gatorade type drink or bottled water, hard candy, chocolate, power/multigrain bars, apple squeezy, etc. Again, decorating the box, adding notes is the best part of these boxes. The nurses love reading the messages in the box.

Baking Cookies for the Guest House- include ingredients

There is no deadline. The ideas are ongoing opportunities to support, no expiration date. All donations for house and hospital can be delivered to the Reinhart Guest House, 1100 Libbie Avenue, between the hours of 9am-5pm, Monday – Sunday.  Please visit www.reinharthouse.org to learn about more opportunities to support.  Questions, please call 804-314-1579 or lisa_patten@bshsi.org.

Safe Harbor Shelter provides shelter, counseling, support, education, and advocacy to individuals who have been impacted by violence and abuse.  Their website is here: https://safeharborshelter.com/about-us/general-information/.  Students can get involved by providing a healthy meal for residents.  The number of residents is typically less than 10 and meals are dropped off at 2006 Bremo Road Suite 201 between 9am and 3pm.  The food should be cold with instructions for reheating later at the shelter.  You may sign up for a date using this link: https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/3ll7g0

BE A TUTOR

Third Church (just down the road from TMS) runs a tutoring program for immigrant and refugee students in grades K through 12.  They are currently recruiting tutors to work one-on-one with a student every Wednesday evening from 6:45pm to 7:45pm.  Most students are proficient in English (with the majority having a home language of Arabic or Spanish), but they need support understanding their homework.

If volunteers can't commit to coming weekly, they can also sign up to be a substitute tutor.  For more info or questions, please contact Emily Sherman at:

River City Inclusive Gym

"RCIG is a nonprofit that provides fitness and gymnastics classes for people of all ages with disabilities. Our volunteers serve as 1:1 coaches during 1 hour classes, and they are responsible for guiding their athletes and making sure they are safe. We provide online and in person training, and we never pair anyone up with someone that they aren't comfortable working with. We have all new potential volunteers come visit our classes for a chance to observe/shadow and see exactly what we do here at RCIG before committing to being a volunteer."

We have classes Monday - Saturday, and our exact schedule can be found on our website at rcig.org/our-classes/schedule/. Our classes run for an hour. We ask that our volunteers be at least 13 years of age, and that they volunteer at least once a month or more. We have all potential volunteers come visit a class so that they can get a better sense of what we are doing here at RCIG. We use SignUpGenius for our Saturday classes and events, and I coordinate the coverage for our weekday classes (it allows for more control over who fills slots). For anyone interested in volunteering, please have them or their parents email me at rcigvolunteers@rcig.org.

TMS would love your students’ help with stocking our TMS food pantry, which serves our very own community!  Please sign up below, have your child shop for and deliver the food to the pantry, and be sure to have the students record their time for their IB Volunteer log (Mrs Wilcox says you may round their time to the nearest half hour).  Thanks so much for your time and help!

?  I am looking for volunteers for the little kid tennis program for the city.  It’s generally kids first experience with match play.  The volunteers help them keep score and understand good sportsmanship etc.  It’s so, SO cute!  I do certify for volunteer hours and I also draw for an Amazon Gift card at the end of each match day.  (The parents of the kids and the kids nominate the Court Monitors for the drawing).

I hope that some of your kids might be interested in giving back!  Let me know if anyone has questions!

First Match is Saturday, September 17th at 12:30-2:30 PM at Kanawha.  We provide training to all the court monitors.
