Laburnum Elementary School Counseling
Welcome to our school counseling program!
Here, you will find some information that helps introduce our counselors as well as understand our role in providing services and education to your students.
What is school counseling?
The purpose of the comprehensive school counseling program at Laburnum Elementary is to address the academic, personal/social and career needs of every student.
It is our goal as school counselors to collaborate with teachers, families, and our community to provide students with the resources, attitudes, skills and knowledge to be life-long learners and productive citizens in their community.
Our school counseling program will accomplish this goal with the use of books, videos, worksheets, activities and games that are relevant to counseling topics. We shall also follow the standards set forth by the American School Counseling Association.
Monthly Lessons in each classroom, K-5. Lessons topics are based on student need and traits of good citizenship.
Lessons based on student need will:
Make the curriculum relevant and useful to students
Ensure their needs are being met
Lessons based on traits of good citizenship will:
Build a safe school and classroom climate
Encourage students to be active members of their school and community
All lessons incorporate and build social emotional skills.
Small Group Counseling
Small group counseling serves as an opportunity for students to connect and converse about a specific experience. A group may start Subjects are based on anything that several students may be experiencing such as:
Being a new student
Loss in the family
Group counseling can not only help students build rapport with others, but it lets them know they are not alone in their feelings and that others have experienced something similar. All counseling sessions follow procedures of confidentiality, so students can feel safe speaking with their counselors.
Individual counseling is available to all students and may be requested by parents, students and teachers. This is a service for students who have a very specific need that would best be discussed one-on-one. Student may discuss any topic and can trust that sessions are personalized to address their needs.
