When a science class from Fairfield Middle School came in the library to learn how to access and use available databases and to find authentic websites to use in their research for their Science Genetic Disorder Project, it was exciting to see some student-owned learning. Two examples of this were when a student shared that her Grandmother has Alzheimer’s disease, and another student shared that a member of their family had Sickle Cell disease. Both students wanted to learn more about the diseases such as the symptoms, the complications associated with the disorder, the inheritance factor, treatment, and the research outlook of the disease. It was encouraging and gratifying to see them “own their learning” because it meant something to them personally.
