Hello parents, guardians, students, and families!
I'm Mr. Cabaniss, and this is my first year at Colonial Trail, but by no means my first year teaching. I spent ten years teaching 5th grade in Henrico county prior to coming to CTES, many of those working with gifted students. I am certified pre-K through 6th grade with a gifted endorsement.
Being a career switcher, I've had many other life experiences as well, from fast food to retail sales to the handyman service industry. I originally studied Art with an emphasis in Graphic Design at Virginia Tech (go Hokies!), later returning to school to get my Master of Arts in Teaching at Mary Baldwin (fun fact: it's an all girls school...except for the Adult Degree Program). Currently, I also play guitar and bass part time with a Beatles cover band and with the Praise Team at my church. I bring elements of all of these experiences into the classroom, in an effort to reach as many different learning styles as possible.
I married my wonderful wife, Natalie, in November of 2000 and I've enjoyed 19 years of marriage to my best friend! We have two mischievous dogs, Zoey the puggle and Marilyn the beagle, who are great company when I'm grading papers!
When I'm not teaching or playing music, I enjoy reading science fiction, fantasy, comics, history, theology...you name it! I also like to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers (especially if and when they're playing well), and I am an enormous movie buff, especially when it comes to Star Wars (I actually have a "Star Wars room" in my house)!
I'm looking forward to a fantastic first year at CTES and to getting to know all of you! C.T. is a great place to be!
