The vision I have as an educator in the Hendrick Hudson School District is to facilitate learning by engaging students in critical thinking and problem solving in the classroom, lab and community. I strive to have such a command of the content that I can let the students lead the way. Technology tools and devices allow for student access to the curriculum and an individualized experience through feedback. I use student questions or outcomes as a springboard for the next problem to solve. I value being a lifelong learner and continue to develop my knowledge and skills through graduate studies and professional conferences. In order for students to see the value in learning and to be engaged and connected, all STEM activities must be grounded in the real world with seamless integration of science, technology, engineering and math applications. As a science teacher I seek to coach other teachers in applying these tools to all disciplines. In order to develop true learning, students must be able to apply their skills to their future goals. I believe this happens when all activities are meaningful and students can choose how to present their understanding. I foster an environment of accountability where everyone is capable of learning and everyone’s input is valid. By facilitating students collaboration in problem solving, I work to prepare students for both the short term goals of high school and the long term personal goals of college and career.
