All of the courses in the Art Department are designed to help students create artwork for portfolio building in case they would like to attend an arts college. However, we believe that all students can benefit from the study of art and that this study serves as an essential link in developing creative, fully educated and well- rounded learners.Studio in Art is the Regent’s level art class required for graduation. It also serves as the prerequisite and foundation course for all our electives that can create a sequence of courses in this discipline.
STUDIO ART
Studio in Art is full year course which is a prerequisite for all other art courses. Beginner level assignments will cover topics including landscape art, portraiture, social issues, and everyday objects. Students will learn how to mix colors, shade using a variety of drawing and painting mediums, and make expressive works of art.
Drawing & Painting
In this class a variety of techniques and mediums will be used including: pen & ink, charcoal, pastels, acrylic paint, printmaking, and paper collage.

In this class students work on advancing their observational drawing skills and are challenged to develop creative expression through a variety of media: acrylic paint, watercolor, charcoal, ink, printmaking, digital photography, graphic design, and more. Students will begin creating a portfolio for college or personal use.
This class is a general 3-Dimensional design class where students explore and create art objects based on historical references and original ideas. Students will use paper, wire, plaster, wood, mosaic, and foil to design 3D artworks.
There will be a continuation of the study of sculpture techniques so it is advised students take Sculpture in the Fall. This class will focus on hand building and sculpting clay. Pottery wheel work is explored.
This class s designed to teach students the basics of visual communication through graphic design, illustration, logo design, and advertising. Students will learn how to use design programs in the HS Mac lab on a variety of digital devices.
Students may choose to take the 2D Design AP Art exam (when enrolled in AP Art) and work in the Digital Design class can be added to the portfolio exam to give students an advantage. So if you're thinking of taking AP Art, sign up for Digital Design & Photography!
In this class students will learn the basics of using a digital camera or similar device, how to manually adjust light & exposure settings, composition and layout aesthetics, and photo editing. Students should consider taking Graphic Design as well to aid them in learning the digital programs used for photo editing and printing.
*Students interested in AP Art can choose to take the 2D Design AP Art exam and work in the Digital Photo class can be added to the portfolio exam to give students an advantage.
This is a college-level course that is intended for highly motivated students interested in the in-depth study of art. All students must submit a college-level portfolio by May of their senior year. Successful completion of the portfolio will give the student the opportunity to gain college credit. A portfolio is required for acceptance into this class. Students who do not meet the prerequisites may apply and will be given a summer portfolio assignment which must be completed by the start of class. AP exam fees will be collected by the end of the first quarter.
