Sixth Grade Math

In the 6th grade, students build conceptual understanding of and procedural proficiency with ratios, rates, rational numbers, operations with an emphasis on division, and expressions/equations applying this knowledge to solve real world & mathematical problems including geometry and statistics.

The Story of 6th Grade Math (How the Year Unfolds)

After using statistics as a way to become acquainted with fellow students and to gather, analyze & display data, students explore rational numbers, including integers, by considering length in various contexts (number lines, coordinate planes, etc.) before using area to understand expressions, number & operations with an emphasis on the division of rational numbers and the standard algorithm. After working with rationals, length and area to develop a greater understanding of numbers, students focus on understanding and applying ratio, rates & percents, a major work of the grade level. Past work with area and ratio act as a transition into equations & inequalities as students seek to understand linear, quadratic, and cubic terms as they solve simple equations and evaluate formulas for surface area & volume.
