Hello 4th grade families,
This week has been a busy one. Thank you to everyone for the thoughtful teacher appreciation gifts; I truly love each and every gift I received. It is nice to feel appreciated.
Here are some announcements for next week (5/12 - 5/16)
Progress reports will be sent home at some point throughout the week. I have talked to students about staying on top of their grades and making sure they are completing the class work to the best they can. Student behaviors have been on the rise and some students are choosing to engage in other things and other conversations while I'm teaching the important concepts. Those behaviors (good and bad) will reflect in the student's grades.
ELA: Students will be completing the CA State Testing for ELA next week. They will be given plenty of time to complete the test over the course of the week. This is an imperative time for students to show off their skills and knowledge. A separate email was sent out in regards to state testing,
MATH: We will be finishing up chapter 14 and taking the test on Wednesday. An extra credit study guide will either be done in class or sent home. We will also be doing some practice for the math testing which is the following week.
HISTORY: We will have a new newspaper and worksheets to complete. There will be no quiz for this newspaper.
SCIENCE: We will be talking more about rocks and fossils and complete workbook pages.
Our class book is coming along and students are putting on the final touches. It will be shipped out next week. I am hopeful that the books will be returned to us by the end of the school year; given that they don't, I will personally make sure that your student's books get delivered to you and your student. Thank you to those that have purchased a book; it is a forever keepsake for you and your student. If you have not yet ordered a book there is still time. Here are some announcements for our short week next week (4/22 - 4/25)
There is no school on Monday in observance of Easter Monday and Lincoln's birthday.
Thursday is a minimum day, and Open House will take place from 5:00 - 6:00pm. Come check out the classroom and see your student's work.
ELA: We have ended unit 5 which means that the students will not have spelling tests, spelling pages, grammar pages, or practice book pages to complete. Students will take their unit test on Tuesday; it is essentially a long reading test. Wednesday - Friday will be dedicated towards their final writing assignment.
Instead of doing a traditional essay, students will be writing an expository/informational letter. They will be using their chromebooks to do brief research to find an invention that they would like to write about. Prompt: Write an expository letter, with proper addresses, heading, and closing, about an invention that solves a problem.
Paragraph 1: Introduction / what are some new inventions you have heard or read about?
Paragraph 2: What problems did these inventions solve; either in your world or society? Who or what could benefit by using this invention.
Paragraph 3: Your point of view of the invention you chose. Do you think it was a good invention or not? Why? Would you make any changes to the invention?
Students will be graded on the features of an expository letter.
Introduces a topic and shares information about it.
Uses paragraphs to explain the topic of choice with facts, definitions, quotations, and details.
Maintains a formal style.
Has a greeting, closing, and signature
Spelling, capitalization, grammar, and proper indentation.
MATH: We just ended chapter 11. Most of the students completed the study guide (extra credit) in class, but there were a few that took it home. The chapter 11 test will be on Tuesday. We are going to be starting chapter 12 which is about metric measurements. We will be doing 2 lessons a day because it is a short chapter; which means that students will complete chapter 12's study guide (extra credit) on Friday and chapter 12 test will be on Monday 4-28.
HISTORY: Due to the short week and minimum day, we will be taking a break from a history newspaper.
SCIENCE: We will continue to work through unit 3 and complete worksheets. We will be working on Earth Day crafts as well.
Students will also be working on a special writing project throughout the week. Another email will be sent out soon about this exciting writing project.
Please encourage your student to stay on top of their school work, and ensure they are completing homework when they have it. I would also talk to your student about kindness and respect. We are experiencing some unkindness in and out of the classroom no matter how many talks the aides or myself have had to give them.

Here are some important announcements for next week (3/3 - 3/7).
ELA: We will have our unit 4 tests all week long. This means that there will be no spelling tests, no spelling/grammar pages, and no practice book pages. Instead students will have a reading comprehension test on Monday, a grammar test on Tuesday, and Wednesday through Friday will be time spent working on unit 4 essay.
Essay prompt: Students will write a 5-paragraph essay on their accomplishments and successes in their life (past, present, or future). They can choose to write about 3 different accomplishments or 1 accomplishment. Students should talk about what it takes to achieve goals as well.
MATH: We have been working through chapter 9 which is about adding/subtracting fractions and mixed numbers.
HISTORY: Students will continue to work on their mission reports in class. I encourage that students start working in their models at home so they aren’t waiting until the last minute. The projects are due the week of March 17th. In addition, this week we will read a new newspaper about the Gold Rush and complete worksheets, however, there will be no study guide and quiz this week.

I strongly encourage students to keep up with their assignments, especially Math. Students need to work hard to ensure they have no missing assignments. I have continued to make an endless amount of copies for students, however, not many of them get returned.

There is no school Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Enjoy the day off!
Friday, January 24th is the END OF QUARTER 2. Friday will be the last day that I will accept assignments that still need to be completed or missing assignments. All assignments that are still missing will be considered a zero.
Report cards will go home on Friday, January 31st.
ELA: We are ending unit 3 which means that students will have a unit test, similar to the reading test, on Tuesday. Wednesday - Friday will be dedicated to their essays. There will be no spelling tests, spelling pages, grammar pages, or practice book pages to complete.
Essay Prompt: Choose a famous person who has given a powerful speech, tell about their background, the famous speech, and your point of view on what the speech means to you.
Students need to choose a person who has given a speech with powerful meaning. Ex. George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi, Steve Jobs, Susan B. Anthony, Franklin Roosevelt, Maya Angelou, etc.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. I am looking forward to seeing the students again and jumping back into teaching and learning. I have truly missed them! This is the time where we are going to dig deep and finish the year out strong. Your 4th grader has come so far in the school year, but we are not nearly done and still have so much to learn.

MATH: Chapter 6 math tests will be returned on Monday. We will be starting chapter 7 which is about patterns and sequences. This chapter is fairly easy and will be a nice break from the brutal long-division.
This may not apply to your student, however, missing math pages were sent home before winter break for your student to complete over the break. I highly encourage students to take responsibility for their grade and complete those assignments. I have already given 2 sets of copies for those students which is more than I need to do.
SCIENCE: Unit 1 science tests will be returned along with the students' workbooks. Each student will be given the opportunity to complete unfinished pages if they wish to do so. I will ensure that each student knows where their grade stands in Science. We will also be starting unit 2 which talks about animals using their vision for light.
HISTORY: We will not have a newspaper this week. Instead we will be doing some reflection on our New Year's goals.
There will be tutoring on Thursday and Friday for any of your student's needs to catch up with homework, missing assignments, or anything else they need.
The end of quarter 2 is Friday, January 24th. That will be the last day to turn in any work. Report cards will go home Friday, January 31st.

Tuesday is a minimum day (dismissal @ 1:00pm) due to the Holiday Program (show starts @ 5:30pm at the Painted Turtle).

Monday: Reading Comprehension test which is very similar to the reading tests they have taken in the past.
Tuesday: Grammar test to go over the grammar concepts they’ve learned.
Wednesday: Essay brainstorming/flowchart. Students will be writing 3 paragraphs. Prompt: You want to start your own business. What type of business would you like to start? How will it help people in your community? What steps will you take to ensure your business is successful?
Thursday: Essay drafting (writing/editing rough drafts)
Friday: Essay finalizing (writing the final draft)
MATH: Chapter 2 math tests were graded and sent home yesterday. If you student received a 14 or lower then they can redo the test at home. We had to have a lot of discussions about being kind and respectful to each other and to all adults. Starting next week, I will be writing referrals for students who have to have multiple warnings in class to follow directions, who put their hands or feet on another person, or who are disrespectful to myself or others students by saying unkind words. I will email you if your student ever receives a referral. If there are any issues that your student brings up to you, please let me know. Here are a few important announcements for next week (8/26 - 8/30)
Picture day is on Friday 8/30. Please have your student come in their best dressed; we will also be taking our class photo.
Students will be finishing up taking the diagnostic STAR 360 Reading and Math tests on the computer.
We will have a spelling pretest on Monday and a graded spelling test on Friday. This week's spelling words include short vowels. These spelling words are also located on our webpage.

In math, we will be learning/reviewing the concepts of place value, reading and writing multi-digit numbers, comparing numbers, and ordering numbers.
In history, we will be learning about inquiry, primary/secondary sources, and making claims.
In science, we will be learning about electrical systems.
For social emotional learning we will be discussing goal setting.
