To ensure a proper learning atmosphere certain rules and procedures, as well as consequences and rewards, must be made clear. Discipline matters are something that I do not wish to waste valuable class time on. Therefore if I feel that a student is disrupting class I will give them a verbal warning, place their name on the board or ask them to fill out a refocus form in another teacher’s room. A refocus helps students reflect upon their choice(s) and make better decisions in the future. If further or repeated disruptions occur the student will be sent to the principal, parents will be notified and the school discipline policy set forth in the student handbook will be followed. Classroom rewards will be distributed throughout the year using positive comments, notes home, phone calls home, occasional treats, and special privileges. The five following simple rules are expected of all students:
Follow directions the first time they are given
Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself
Raise your hand and wait your turn before speaking
Be in your seat ready to begin class when the bell rings
No teasing or put-downs
In closing, I understand that transitioning to middle school can be difficult. Students meet with many different teachers daily, each with a different set of expectations. To help students flourish, the seventh grade team has developed a student support system that will help students build important skills to become safe, respectful and active learners at Hellgate Middle School. The student support system helps students develop strategies to improve things like organization, communication and decision making. I am confident that we are going to have a great year. I have very high expectations for my students and myself. I think as educators and parents we often underestimate young people's tremendous potential. It is my goal to push and guide each student toward his or her fullest potential. The importance of parental involvement in a child's education can not be overemphasized. I would appreciate hearing from you about any concerns or ideas that might help your child succeed. For my part, I will stay in contact with you as best as I can about any problems or accomplishments.
